CALISTO 2 (Regular HS, 2021-2022)

Post by Arras Agility »

CALISTO 2, the sequel to CALISTO 1, will be available for mirrors starting October 2, 2021. This set will target high school regular difficulty, at the level of CALISTO 1 — this is also about the level of NAQT’s Invitational Series (IS) sets, but our set will differ substantially from IS sets in subject distribution and writing philosophy.

The set will be head-edited by Justine French. I, Alistair Gray, will handle set logistics.

Set Details

We will produce 14 packets, each consisting of 20 power-marked tossups and 20 three-part bonuses. Tossups will be limited to 6 lines in 10-point Times New Roman before powermarking and pronunciation guides; bonus parts and leadins will similarly be limited to 2 lines. Difficulty will be uniform across packets. Our distribution, with subject editors noted, is as follows:

4/4 Literature (William Orr, Justine French)
1.5/1.5 Long Fiction (novels, novellas, etc.)
.75/.75 Poetry
.5/.5 Drama
1.25/1.25 Other Literature (such as Short Stories, Essays, Mixed-Genre, etc.)

4/4 History (Govind Prabhakar, Arthur Delot-Villain)
1.25/1.25 U.S. History
1.5/1.5 European History
1.25/1.25 World History

4/4 Science
.75/.75 Physics (Dylan Bowman)
.75/.75 Chemistry (Shahar Schwartz)
1/1 Biology (Shahar Schwartz)
.5/.5 Mathematics (Dylan Bowman)
.33/.33 Astronomy (Eric Yin)
.33/.33 Computer Science (Alistair Gray)
.33/.33 Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Science (Eric Yin)

3/3 Fine Arts (Rohan Venkateswaran, Jeffrey Ma)
.75/.75 Painting and Sculpture
.75/.75 Classical Music
1.5/1.5 Other Fine Arts (such as Film, Architecture, Jazz, Musicals, Misc. Art, etc.)

1.5/1.5 Religion and Mythology
.75/.75 Religion (Nick Dai)
.75/.75 Mythology (Rohan Venkateswaran)

1/1 Philosophy and Social Sciences (Tasis Gemmill-Nexon)
6/6 (total) Philosophy
8/8 (total) Social Sciences (such as Economics, Psychology, Linguistics, Political Science, etc.)

2.5/2.5 Other (Alistair Gray)
.75/.75 Geography
.5/.5 Current Events
.75/.75 Popular Culture
.5/.5 Other Academic

Mirrors

We are looking for mirrors in all regions. To request a mirror or if you have questions about the set, please email me at [email protected].

The mirror fee will be $17 per non-house team. We will lower this fee to $15 per non-house team if hosts both:
1. Publicly post team and individual statistics, such as those produced by SQBS or Yellowfruit, on hsquizbowl.org; and
2. Make detailed conversion statistics available to the set editors. This can be done by using a recognized online scoresheet system such as UCSD Scoresheets or TJ Sheets, and sharing such scoresheets with the editors.

We call on the editing staff of other high school tournaments to follow our lead in raising mirror fees to $17, to compensate for the underpayment of the writers of high-school-difficulty housewrites which has been the norm to date.

In view of the fact that different regions will have different circumstances, we will allow uses of the set for either in-person or online tournaments, provided in-person tournaments conform to local requirements and guidelines. We will require that online tournaments restrict their fields to the “circuits” that the hosting institutions belong to, so as to ensure consistency between mirrors. We will also require use of electronic scoresheets for the mirror fee discount regardless of tournament medium.

CALISTO 2 recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign nation, independent of the so-called “People’s Republic of China.” Any protests on the grounds that Taiwan is not a country should be duly rejected.

Please also note that “CALISTO” in “CALISTO 2” is no longer an acronym, unlike CALISTO 1.

Additional Notes on the Distribution

Based on stats from CALISTO 1 and other sets, we realized that many canonical answerlines get rather poor conversion, especially in Poetry, Physics, and Painting. As a result, we have decreased the size of several categories from 1/1 to .75/.75. To compensate, we have increased the size of categories which we believe have more material to ask. The most experimental of these expansions is 1.5/1.5 Other Fine Arts. We are confident that this will be possible to execute, but if we find that it is not, we will adjust the distribution (without decreasing the total number of Fine Arts questions).

Some other notes on the distribution:
  • Ancient History will be divided between the other History subcategories as appropriate.
  • Questions like the “tapestries” tossup in CALISTO 1 will be under Misc. Art, rather than Painting and Sculpture, in CALISTO 2.
  • Social Sciences will emphasize Economics and Psychology, but not as much as in CALISTO 1.
  • All mathematics questions will be non-computational.
