The Grapes of Smath V - 4/18, DART

Post by bengordon »

NCSSM is proud to announce our fifth annual Grapes of Smath tournament! Our tournament will be held on April 18th on Discord using DART, a regular difficulty question set written and edited by experienced quizbowl players from top teams across the nation. The questions will be around the same difficulty as an NAQT IS set. Standard NAQT rules will apply.

Eligibility: Our tournament will be open to all high schools from the Southeastern United States (NC, SC, TN, MS, GA, FL, AL, KY, southern VA.) Schools from North Carolina will be guaranteed entry in the event of a waitlist.

Fee Structure:
Base fee: $60 for the first team a school brings, $50 for each additional team.
Novice discount: -$10 for any team that has only participated in NCASA, explicitly “novice” events, or unpaid scrimmages this school year.
Minimum fee: $40 per team

Outside Staff:
Unaffiliated staffers (sign up here) will be paid $10 per half or $25 for the full day. Affiliated staffers (sign up on the second tab of the signup sheet) will give their school a $15 discount.

Registration: Please register on our signup sheet by April 11th. Up to 4 teams per school are permitted until April 1st - after that feel free to field more teams if you want to. Rosters can be edited at any time.

Payment: We prefer to receive payment by check or through our online payment portal. We can also use Venmo or PayPal if necessary. Invoices will be sent to all registered teams after the registration deadline. Please get your payments in by April 25th (one week after the event).

Schedule: The first round will start at 9 AM Eastern time. Teams will be guaranteed 9-10 rounds, with round-robin prelims and playoffs. We will have a lunch break after the 4th or 5th preliminary round.

Please email [email protected] and [email protected] if you have any questions. We hope to see you there!

Hi, is this tournament a qualifier for PACE/HSNCT?

Thanks!

We should be able to gain platinum certification for PACE NSC - we had no issue doing so for our last tournament (Smath Creek Invitational).

Due to a local conflict affecting many schools in the NC Triangle, we are moving our competition to Sunday, April 18th. We would have moved to the 24th but wish to avoid conflicting with the SSNCT.

Update on regional eligibility: any Virginia schools in or south of Richmond are fully able to compete in this tournament.

We would very much like to have 16 teams exactly (or 18 or 20 or 24). In-region schools are welcome to sign up or add a team up until Friday night! If we do not have enough in-region teams, we will admit out of region teams at our discretion to get an optimal field size.

We will be capping the field at 1618 due to a smaller than expected number of staffers. Teams from the waitlist will be let off if anyone drops or if we get significantly more unaffiliateds. Sign up here if you are interested in reading and/or keeping score!
