Ladue Invitational Spring Tournament IX – 4/03/21 (SATURNALIA)

Post by eygotem »

Hello everyone,

The Ladue Quizbowl Team is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our ninth annual Ladue Invitational Spring Tournament (LIST IX) on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021. We will be conducting the tournament virtually through Zoom.

Registration is region-locked to teams from Missouri and southern Illinois. We may grant exemptions—teams from other regions should email [email protected] if they would like to participate. In consistency with previous years, we intend to qualify the top teams for a bid to the 2021 PACE National Scholastic Championship, which will be held online on June 5th–6th, 2021.

For questions, we will be using SATURNALIA, a regular-plus difficulty question set written by experienced quizbowl players from top teams across the nation, including members of the Ladue Quizbowl Team. The questions will be more difficult than an NAQT Invitational Series set, but less difficult than HSNCT or PACE NSC. Full details about the set can be found here.

Eligibility
This is a varsity-level tournament—all high school students who are eligible to play quizbowl under the rules of MSHSAA or another state organization (if applicable) will be eligible for LIST. However, non-Missouri teams must register by March 4th, 2021 to accommodate the MSHSAA sanctioning process.

Tournament Rules
We will use the ACF ruleset with the optional power mark addendum, with the following modifications:
• All players will be required to turn on their video feeds during each match. We will grant case-by-case exceptions for players whose video feeds cause excessive lag.
• Players must wait to be verbally recognized by the moderator after buzzing in, to avoid any confusion from client-server lag.
• Players will have 5 seconds to answer a tossup after being verbally recognized.
• Teams will have 8 seconds to answer a bonus part after the moderator stops reading.
• All answers must be given verbally. Anything typed in the chat will NOT count as an answer.
• As per MSHSAA rules, bonus answers must be given by the team’s designated captain, unless the captain verbally defers to a teammate.
There will be NO bouncebacks on bonuses.

Format
• Questions will be read through Zoom, and players will buzz in using buzzin.live.
• Each team may consist of a maximum of 6 players, and a maximum of 4 players may play for a team at any given time—schools should register multiple teams if they have more than 6 players.
• 24-team field, with the possibility that this might expand
• Bracketed round-robin prelims
• Re-bracketed round-robin playoffs and consolation rounds
• Finals and/or placement rounds if necessary

Entry Fees
First team from a school: $70
Second, third, etc. teams from the same school: $65
Staff discount*: –$10 per competent staff member
New team discount: –$25 for teams that have not attended any pyramidal quizbowl tournaments within the past 3 years (not including single-subject events like History Bowl)

*Staff are on an as-needed, first-come, first-serve basis. When registering, please detail how many staff you may be able to bring. As the tournament approaches, we will let you know whether they are needed or not.
We will also accept staff who are not affiliated with a participating team. If you intend to be an unaffiliated staffer, please email us—we can give you the $10 discount as direct compensation.

We prefer that payments be sent through mail, addressed to Jonah Krueger, 1201 S. Warson, St. Louis, MO 63124. Please make all checks out to "LHWHS Attn: Jonah Krueger". You can also pay us through Venmo or Paypal.

Code of Conduct
All players, coaches, and staff will be required to follow the PACE Code of Conduct. If you see anyone engaging in inappropriate behavior during the tournament, please do not hesitate to contact the tournament directors and/or fill out the quizbowl misconduct form. In particular, no cheating of any kind will be tolerated at our tournament. We reserve the right to remove and disqualify problematic individuals or teams at our discretion.

Field Cap & Registration
We are setting a tentative field cap of 24 teams. There is no limit to the number of teams each school may bring. We will likely be able to expand if there is enough interest, but until that point, we will accept teams on a first-come, first-serve basis. If our field fills, we will be able to guarantee every team in attendance at least 9 games, if not more. Fields can fill fast, so sign up soon to reserve your slot! You can register your team by filling out this Google form.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email [email protected]. We hope to see you at our tournament on April 3rd!

Update: LIST IX is now a Platinum Qualifier for the PACE NSC, meaning that the top 25% of teams at the tournament (rounded up) will qualify for the National Scholastic Championship.

Also, our field is now one team away from being full—we will look into expanding the field to 30 teams if we have enough staff.

Will this tournament potentially expand to a field of 32 teams?

Yes, we are looking into a field expansion right now, and will announce one if/when we secure enough staff.

Update: We now have enough staff to expand our field to 30 teams! We will further expand to 32 once we secure an additional moderator.

Also, a reminder that the deadline for non-Missouri teams to register is this Thursday, March 4th.

Thank you to everyone who competed at LIST today! Special thanks to our staffers, and to Kyle Hill for graciously providing his online scoresheet system.

Congratulations to Beavercreek for winning the tournament, Detroit Country Day School for placing 2nd, Detroit Catholic Central A for placing 3rd, and St. Joseph Central A for placing 4th! These teams, as well as 5th-place St. Louis Patriots, have earned bids to this year's PACE NSC in June 5-6.

Team and individual statistics will be available here once I finish entering them: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6776/

We hope to see you again at LIST X next year!
