The Island Cup Online (BUTTERSCOT)

Post by a Joe »

In light of recent events, we are proud to announce that the May edition of the Island Cup will now take place on Discord! Details follow.

DATE AND TIME:

The Island Cup will take place on May 9, 2020, from 10 AM EST to 4 or 5 PM. Online registration opens at 9:15 AM. All players and coaches should be logged onto the server by 9:45 AM.

QUESTIONS/FORMAT:

This tournament will be using the BUTTERSCOT, an easier version of the Scottie. The set difficulty is Regular-Minus (for teams unfamiliar, it is best described as being of moderate difficulty).

Our May 30 event (details here) will be using the full Scottie. That event is more appropriate for advanced teams. Schools can play both events, subject to restrictions; contact us for details.

In order to ensure the integrity of our tournament, no bonuses will be read. As such, this will be a tossup-only event, with 20 read per round. Otherwise, the tournament will follow NAQT rules.

Teams will be seeded into preliminary brackets, followed by re-seeding for playoffs. All teams will be guaranteed 10 rounds. Teams are expected to stay and play the entire event, even if you are not in contention for the championship.

The initial field cap will be 24 teams. If we get sufficient moderators, we will up this to 30 teams. 50% of spots will be reserved for teams from Long Island, Connecticut, New York City, and the Hudson Valley, as well as teams who attended a previous in-person Island Cup event.

TEAMS:

There are a maximum of 4 players per team, all of whom may play at once. No alternates or substitutions will be permitted. Teams may play short, with a minimum of one player. Nobody may switch teams during the tournament, such as from "A" to "B" or otherwise. There will be a maximum of 4 teams per school.

Without exception, all players MUST be from the same school. This is not an open mirror; no chimera teams are permitted whatsoever.

To ensure the smooth functioning of our event, rosters must be submitted at least one week in advance. Coaches are welcome to spectate, as long as we know in advance.

We are happy to allow pseudonymous teams and teams not directly sponsored by their school or district to register. However, we do have certain requirements for these teams, so please contact us via email or phone prior to registration and we will be happy to work with you.

PRIZES:

Trophies will be mailed to the top three teams as well as the top individual. We reserve the right to increase the number of trophies and prizes as the field expands at our discretion. In addition, all teams are eligible for the Island Cup! See here for details.

FEES:

There will be a flat fee of $75 per team for either division. There is a $20 discount available if you bring a moderator. Fees are due at least one week prior to the event.

Payment can be made via mailed check, PayPal, Venmo, or Wire (if you insist). Please do not mail cash. Note that PayPal, Venmo, and Wire may charge an additional fee. We can process purchase orders and we will provide W-9 forms and invoices on request.

Write all checks to "The Long Island Quiz Bowl Alliance". Mail checks to P.O. Box 205, Nesconset, NY 11767.

REGISTRATION:

In order to register, follow one of these options:

-- Fill out THIS GOOGLE FORM
-- Email us at [email protected] or post in this thread with the following:
---- Number of teams
---- The name of your school, and pseudonym if applicable
---- An email address where we can reach you
-- We can also take registrations by phone; I cannot post the phone number here, but reach out and I will call you.

Once you receive a confirmation from us, you are officially registered.

Please ensure you register prior to the day of the tournament. The drop deadline is one week prior to the event, after which you will be responsible for the full amount due.

STATS:

Full and complete team and individual stats will be posted within 48 hours after the completion of the tournament.

MODERATORS:

We can use as many staffers as we can get for this event: moderators, scorekeepers, and more. All staffers will be paid $20.

If you have any further questions, please let us know!

NOTE:

This tournament will be following The Long Island Protocols for Handling Accusations of Cheating.

In order to ensure an enjoyable experience for all teams, the field has been split into the National and Standard divisions! One will use the Scottie, and the other will use the BUTTERSCOT, an easier edition of the Scottie.

Any questions should be directed to the email listed above. We hope to see you all there!

This tournament was today!

Wayzata took home the championship, defeating Scarsdale from the Hudson Valley for the title. They were followed by Kinkaid; Canada NB; Morgantown; Hewlett from right here on Long Island; Kellenberg also from Long Island; "Pierre Trudeau" from New York City; Naperville North; and Aloha to round out the top 10.

Congrats to Jacob from Pierre Trudeau for winning the scoring prize with just over 100 PPG!

A special thanks to our impeccable crew of staffers! The tournament ran pretty much flawlessly.

And finally, a shoutout to the new teams who haven't played a Saturday tournament before or in a long time:
Shoreham-Wading River; Blind Brook; Hewlett; Yonkers; and Briarcliff. It was great to have you all and we hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Stats are up at this link. Thanks to everyone for coming!
