CSI XIV (11/23/19) @ Cave Spring MS (Roanoke, VA)

Post by kamikaze »

I am happy to announce our 14th annual Cave Spring Invitational (CSI) will take place at Cave Spring MIDDLE School (4880 Brambleton Ave, Cave Spring, VA 24018) in scenic southwest Virginia. Our high school is still under renovations and we managed to secure our middle school for this event this year. We've scheduled our tournament for November 23, 2019.

AFFILIATION: We just secured our affiliation with PACE and we are now a PLATINUM qualifier tournament. The top 25% of the teams in the field will qualify to compete at the PACE NSC on June 6-7 in Chicago.

QUESTIONS: We have secured the LOGIC housewrite for our tournament. If you want to see what their distribution is like, click on the following link: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... 09&t=22817

FORMAT: Our field cap is 36 teams but we reserve the right to expand the field should we find enough moderators. We are going to guarantee ten rounds of competition for everyone, at least. Trophies will be given to the top three teams and we usually award the top ten individuals with some sort of prize. Neg King/Queen award is also available. We also have other contests going on throughout the day that kids can participate in and win prizes.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work; max of 2 buzzer systems)
Travel discount: $15 off school's total fee if you have to travel more than 150 miles as determined by Google Maps.
New team discount: Teams that have never been to the CSI or NCIS may receive a 50% discount on their first team registered (any additional teams from that school have to be brought in at full price).
Minimum fee: $35

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, up to four of whom may play at one time. There will be no exceptions to this rule. If you bring more than six players, you must register a second team to have all of them play. There is a halftime substitution opportunity in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day-no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players.

FOOD: As always, we will provide a simple breakfast, free of charge. We have been providing a simple lunch consisting of pizza, fruit, chips and a drink for lunch at a reasonable price.

HOTEL: Holiday Inn at Tanglewood (http://www.holidayinn.com/roa-tanglewood) is the closest hotel to our location and one of the best hotels in the area. Four stars on Trip Advisor and high marks on Hotels.com. Their usual rates are $128 per night but they have graciously reserved a block of rooms for our tournament with a discounted rate of $79. If you are interested in taking advantage of this offer, contact the Alisha Arnold at either [email protected] or (540) 767-6453 and ask about the "Quizbowl" block.

COACHES CHALLENGE: Any coach/adult/reader not affiliated with Cave Spring HS is eligible to play. Top winners will some sort of prize to recognize their achievement. The format will be similar to last year, where all contestants do a 20-25 question worksheet at the time of registration. The highest qualifying scores will compete in a short buzzer match after lunch and before playoff announcements.

STUDENT CHALLENGE: We offer a side event in the morning for any high school player to participate in. Students will be show a slideshow of various scenes, all revolving around a theme, and are asked to identify as many as they can. The highest score will be rewarded with a prize during the individual awards.

If you have any questions or wish to register, feel free to contact Bob Powers at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you all here.

Okay. We've raised our field cap to 32! I'm not sure how much farther we can stretch it though so this could possibly be the final field cap. We have room for two more teams as of right now. Also, we have been PLATINUM certified by PACE so the top 25% will qualify for the national tournament at the end of the season.

Our field is closed as of right now and we are putting teams who registered on the waitlist right now. If we manage to get to 36, we may raise the field cap one last time.

Just updated our announcement with an offer from a local hotel. They are offering a substantial discount to their usual nightly rates and offering a block of rooms for our traveling guests. If you're interested contact the Sales Manager in the announcement and mention "Quizbowl" and they should hook you up. Also, we're looking for one or two more teams before raising the field cap so if you're interested, please act soon!

We've bumped up our cap to 36 and this is the final time we're doing so. We have 35 teams in the field right now so we do have one spot available. Otherwise, we'll probably ask the teams in attendance to volunteer members for a chimera team. We do have a team that is interested but nothing definite for #36. First come, first serve!

Hello everyone. I wanted to thank you all for your participation in our invitational this past Saturday and as well as your patience with us. I know it was a long day for all and Tamara and I will be sitting down and discussing how to improve for next year. In the meantime, there were a couple of additional details I wanted to share with you. First, I wanted to thank those moderators who came in and sacrificed their time to help out our tournament. The academic team at both Virginia Tech and Roanoke College helped immensely as well as individuals like Debbie Myers, Ken Flint and his son, McKennon, as well as some former alumnae gave up a good portion of their Saturday to make sure everyone had a chance to compete.

In the last round of the tournament, the top two brackets were reseeded and played one last round for their final placement. A hearty congratulations goes to Eastside from Georgia for remaining undefeated throughout the tournament. They had to beat a very tough Norfolk Academic Guild team, who ended up in 2nd place. George Washington from West Virginia was able to best Blacksburg A for the 3rd place trophy. Stats for the tournament can be found here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/5814/. The final rankings of the top 12 teams are as below and the top 9 teams (top 25% of the field, rounded up) will qualify for PACE Nationals:

1. Eastside (GA)
2. Norfolk Academic Guild
3. George Washington (WV)
4. Blacksburg A
5. Honaker A
6. Blacksburg B
7. Hidden Valley A
8. Tony Stark Memorial Academy
9. George Wythe
10. Fort Defiance A
11. NKA Homeschool Collective
12. Fort Defiance B
