HSAPQ Tournament #24 available in new "8-8-8" format

Post by Matt Weiner » Mon Jan 16, 2012 11:11 pm

HSAPQ is making an additional tournament set available this year. It will serve as the pilot for the "8-8-8" packet format that we plan to use for the new state championship program in the 2012-2013 season.

This means that each packet contains three periods. The first and third periods are each 8 tossups with powers and 30-point bonuses. In these periods, there are no differences in the question structure or gameplay from a normal tossup/bonus set. The middle period is two sets of 8 one-part questions, one directed to each team. In each set of 8, 3 questions are math calculation. The other parts will come from a variety of categories, will not be timed or themed or otherwise constitute a "lightning round," and do not bounce back by default (though, as always, hosts may choose to use a bounceback rule if they wish).

The subject distribution is the same as in any HSAPQ tossup/bonus set, modulo the additional math calculation directed parts. Also like the normal tournament sets, there are tiebreaker questions in each packet and 15 packets in the set.

This set shares questions with VHSL Districts and Regionals, and thus teams from public schools in Virginia are ineligible to play. It is available for use everywhere else in the quizbowl world.

Please contact me at mattweiner@hsapq.com if you have any questions about this set, or Carsten Gehring at OctagonJoe@gmail.com if you wish to reserve it for use at your tournament.

Due to a lack of interest this year, the above set is no longer being produced or offered.

We will be posting a sample packet in the 8-8-8 format so people can examine and discuss it before next year's planned use of it at new regional and state championships.

Did this ever happen, or is it waiting until the end of the year? I don't see it on HSAPQ's website.

Did this ever get posted/done, or is it just waiting for tournaments this year?

Also, is this an available option for HSAPQ's tournaments this year? Any extra charge?
