BOKCHOI @ Bell (Ottawa, ON) 27 Nov. 2010

Post by Masked Canadian History Bandit » Thu Nov 18, 2010 10:54 pm

Bell High School in Ottawa, Ontario will be hosting, B.O.K.C.H.O.I. (or Bell's Open Kickoff Competition Helping Ottawa Improve) on 27 Nov. 2010 on its campus on 40 Cassidy Road (you can guess the city and province). Despite the word "open" in its title, this event is only for teams that represent individual high schools (though there is no limit on the number of teams one school maybe bring except those necessitated by room availability). The event will run roughly from 09:00 - 16:00.

SET

This set will be using NAQT's IS-98 set. There are 24 tossups and 24 bonuses in each of its 15 packets, and the tossups are power-marked. For those teams which hate computational math, this set will (unfortunately) include the 1/1 computation math per set.

For those interested, this will be the first time an IS set has been played in Canada by high-schoolers.

A sample of an IS set (from an older pack) may be found here and used for practice: http://www.naqt.com/samples/t1582packet_01.pdf

VISION

This tournament is meant to welcome new schools in the Ottawa region into the NAQT format and to provide a higher level tournament for the top teams in the region.

Hence, they would like to extend a special welcome to all schools previously and currently involved in the pop-culture/sports filled and terribly edited SchoolReach and Reach For The Top formats who would like to expand their team into the rapidly growing NAQT organization. Because of this, there will be a special discount for all schools that have never competed in the Quizbowl format. This discount still applies to teams who have members who have played on #scobowl and #lisgartrivia on Slashnet, provided they have not physically competed in the Quizbowl format.

PRICING

$60 for the first team
$50 for each additional team from same school
-$10 per working buzzer set (to be determined by the TD)
-$20 for all schools new to NAQT
-$10 for each 100 km away your school campus is from the Bell campus (calculated by Google Maps). Please e-mail the TD (see CONTACT, below) for possible additional discounts.

Money (cash or cheques, peferably cash) will be taken at the door. IOUs will be accepted, but should be repaid promptly.

RUNNING FIELD

Not Glebe - 1 team, plus 1 buzzers
*Earl of March - 1 team, new to NAQT
Colonel By - 1-2 teams, plus 1 buzzers
Gloucester - 1 team
Lisgar - 3 teams, 3 buzzers
Bell - X teams = X dollars

7-8 teams, 6 buzzers, as of Wednesday, November 24th at 9:00PM.

HSNCT

Since the questions will be from a standard IS-series packet, and it will be an Official NAQT Tournament. Because of that, the top 15% (rounded up to the nearest integer) of the teams from BOKCHOI will qualify for the HSNCT in Atlanta, Georgia. HSNCT is the American National Championship, and only one Canadian team, Lisgar Collegiate of Ottawa, has ever attended, so it is sorely desired that more Canadian teams qualify, register, and attend.

Useful links on the NAQT HSNCT can be found here: http://www.naqt.com/hsnct/

CONTACT

Any questions should be posted below, and I can relay it to the TD (notice how I don't go to Bell), or you can email the TD himself at nickjay12ATgmailDOTcom. Any updates which are posted on the FB event (found here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=1 ... 557&ref=ts) will be transferred by myself.

Earl of March played in the very first Ottawa HS tournament, but not since. They may be under a new coach.

I will be there in a to-be-determined capacity.

Well the Earl of March team has completely changed since then, so we can probably ignore that.

This tournament happened. Lisgar A came first (despite only having 1 A-liner on that lineup), Lisgar D came second, and Earl of March came third. Top scorers were Patrick Liao of Lisgar A, Charles Li of Gloucester, and David Parlour (sp?) of Bell A. This was a decently run tournament, and it was refreshing to have an IS set played.

Stats are forthcoming.

I wasn't the stats person, but since the file was on my computer, an unofficial version of the stats is available at: http://uotrivia.ca/stats/bokchoi/bokchoi_standings.html

This is redacted. After the tournament staff proofread the scoring work of their novice scorekeepers, several mistakes in keeping a proper running tally and assigning individual points to the right power were fixed. Fortunately, the TD says that these mistakes were relatively minor, and did not affect the outcome of any game.

Yeah, they had to recheck the scoresheets, and things got changed around, so when they reuploaded, something must've screwed up. Official stats are here: http://reach.bellhs.net/stats/bokchoi/B ... dings.html
