Re: (8/22/2020) 2020 MS Kickoff Tournament, hosted by LONE STAR
The tournament indeed lasted longer than anticipated, and we truly apologize for that. There are some lessons I've learned from this experience that I will apply to future mirrors. Most of the delay resulted from delays at the start and a very low-probability and complicated tie that we had to break...

The field is currently closed at 12, but new teams are still welcome to register and be on a waitlist in case other teams drop or more teams sign up.
Logistics emails about payment, how to play, rules, etc. will be sent out shortly as soon as we finalize our plans for the field.

Re: On the Abundance of High School Sets During the Pandemic [And Its Problems]
At least for the fall, when presumably no in-person tournaments will be occurring, the dates of basically all tournaments are going to be controlled by a small number of people, namely those who are logistics managers for each housewrite, plus NAQT and AQBL. This issue of too many sets has only gott...

There are two ways people get better at quizbowl, in general. The way I like to analogize this is with a landscape of sand. New learning is represented by adding sand. Every point on the landscape is a particular topic, and the height of the point is how deeply you know that topic. In general, peopl...

By contrast, I included Arizona (also Mountain Time) in West Coast because I don't know of any instances where Arizona players really go too far outside Arizona / SoCal or try to do so and so that grouping made sense to me. I think there's a distinction to be made here between "coaches" and "adult supervision". It should probably be the case that all HS and MS teams attending tournaments be required to have some adult supervision (NAQT's chaperone policies at NCTs are a good model for this). Howeve...

Re: On the Abundance of High School Sets During the Pandemic [And Its Problems]
It is seeming like, at least for a substantial part of the season, in-person mirrors won't be allowed (even if they're technically allowed within the reopening, I doubt many schools would like the liability issues and actually let them be held). For example, if in-person college classes of people fr...

To clarify, I don't think tossup/bonus cycles should be intentionally of the same category (that does indeed help extreme specialism too much, as Alistair has said), but I don't think they should be intentionally different categories either. Adding to Eric's points, paired bonuses would make tracking conversion data a lot easier. Currently, moderators often skip bonuses (either by mistake or misunderstanding), making it difficult to tell what bonus was read in a given tossup/bonus cycle, therefore making it difficult to read bonus conv...

The first line of the Taiwan tossup made it very fraudable; I'm not sure how many islands are theorized to have had proto-languages on them, but the number is definitely quite small. More generally, using "this island" as a pronoun often in this set made many tossups easier to narrow down ...
