In North Carolina's Public Libraries QB, the librarians do it, and all the q's go into a centralized database from which someone generates the question sets. The quality of these questions is on the other hand quite... well... I don't know who the person is who writes the questions but it used to be...

Whoa Rick...
The individual stats would help me if I were to select an all-star team for Panasonic if I weren't able to have bona fide try-outs (which I may be charged with for a process of selecting a North Carolina team), or at least to narrow down a field to invite for try-outs. If this were a reward for a st...

There's only one problem with the tennis or golf ranking programs, and that is that they truly measure an individual's performance in the sport (which makes sense). Quiz bowl on the other hand is usually about team play, and the rosters from week to week can change. Also considering that a team can ...

Mathematics and calculators
In continuing discussions from the Nationals board, I am interested in the construction of calculation questions involving calculators. I know I have my particular opinions about it, mostly mixed. But I want to know what makes a good quiz bowl/academic competition question that involves a calculator...

The one thing about Panasonic that makes it less worthy of bashing than NAC is that few teams have delusions about its validity. The noncompetitive teams, by and large, are there for the trip, the competitive teams, by and large, for the money. I'm not sure to what extent it diverts money from real...

I can try to address the corporate sponsor bit in general because Academic Decathlon is even more ludicrous with its corporate sponsorship package than Panasonic. In essence, Polk County has the advantage of having relationships with corporate sponsors in the area to underwrite many of the costs bec...

Just a couple of things... I'm letting the URL forwarding lapse for about a week until around July 1 so that I can get that on the proper budget (calendar year thing for budgeting). Re: Another approach
Perhaps another way to rank is by overall program strength over the years and not just this season. That is, what schools have the top programs year in and year out. Here are my top ten programs: 1. Dorman 2. Brookwood 3. Thomas Jefferson 4. James Island 5. Irmo 6. Dunbar 7. Richard Montgomery 8. D...

There is also more with Chip in that he writes questions all the time and runs/contracts with a number of competitions. Note: this is mostly my personal opinion and partially represents past practices with PACE. While they are available on request (and we are trying to put some of our older sets up for free), we want to be sure that certain people don't decide to pilfer our questions for their own illicit purposes. All quiz bowl games (and most academic competitions for that matter) really test on the first level of Bloom's taxonomy: recall of information. After that point, the analysis is probably going to be subjective in my opinion. I bring up the point that I'm involved with Academic Decathlon, which pride...

ASCN, like PACE, is a non-profit organization that does not run a ton of competitions in its own style although they do run four quarters format (unlike PACE). Keep in mind as you continue on this thread, the preliminary games at NAC were abridged versions of the games played in previous years. Each quarter (except the 60 second round) was somewhat shortened in order to complete a game in 30 minutes instead of 45. This was done so that each team could pla...
