Re: Reviving some HSNCT discussion
First, I'm not a terribly complete NAQT player because the music, movies, geography, political leaders, and current events are either things I don't know or have answer selection that tends to play away from my strengths. So the seven powers (in a 20-TU game) you rang up against us in the finals of...

To clarify what I mean about world leaders...they should only show up in one part of the distribution. I don't care what one it is (current events makes the most sense) but they shouldn't be showing up in every TU whose answer is a country. And when the appear, they should show up towards the end. T...

Reviving some HSNCT discussion
There wasn't really a hardcore HSNCT question discussion this year. I kind of meant to start one after playing the mirror about a month ago, but didn't. Now I'll share my thoughts. First, I'm not a terribly complete NAQT player because the music, movies, geography, political leaders, and current eve...

The events of this work are set one month after the death of Sue's husband, who was tragically killed in a freak boating accident. During a heated argument in the living room, Sue's son, John, likens the title character to a Catholic priest, accusing him of both pedophilia and murder. That argument...

Seriously, all due respect to our colleague from Brown, but any athletic competition at which a Ukranian is best is not a sport in my book. And though I have tremendous respect for the fitness of those dudes, as said above, it doesn't make for compelling TV. And there's a very low athlete-stripper-...

As sad as murder-suicides are, I can't help but point out that this is a tribute thread to someone whose entire noteworthiness consists of being part of a long-running soap opera, except that instead of endless romantic entanglements, the plot consisted of pretending to punch people in the face. Ben, early in my senior year I was in the same boat as a lot of your players are right now. Having grown up on four-quarter format and making the playoffs at NAC as juniors, our team made the decision to go to the NAC instead of the HSNCT. We wound up advancing out of the DC bracket and losing the c...

I really think this is an issue for when a logistical ceiling is reached. The HSNCT could honestly be twice as big or bigger if they implement two preliminary pools and run one on Saturday, one on Sunday, and the playoffs on Monday as I believe Matt has suggested. The reality is that high school qui...

That was my thought. Much like poker, quizbowl isn't a good thing to broadcast live.Gonzagapuma1 wrote:Maybe they could do a Lon Mcearen/Norman Chad during the WSOP thing where they do the commentary where no one can hear them amd that way they could talk about the questions if they were put on screen.

I think many people in quizbowl--especially people who decide what quizbowl formats to use when televising quizbowl--falsely assume that the game is inherently uninteresting and that gimmicky things must be done to the format itself to make it more interesting. Shorter questions, varied rounds, wack...

The thing that makes StarCraft great is the gameplay. The races are impeccably balanced and there are enough strategies in each race's arsenal to keep the game interesting. And the physical aspects of the game (clicking, scrolling, hotkeys, queue time) are all fast enough to allow for top-level play...
