Re: EFT at Stanford, 10/15

Thanks to all teams who came out to this tournament yesterday! Congratulations to Berkeley A for their win (and sorry you had to play so many finals!) This tournament could not have run so well without such wonderful staffers. Thanks to Jay Bhasin, James Bradbury, Jim Puls, and Ankit Aggarwal for be...

A few teams have dropped/been reformed as of this morning. The field now reflects these changes.

Re: EFT at Stanford, 10/15

We have reached 10 teams for this tournament, so unless there's a sudden influx of 2 more teams, we will be closing the field.

Re: Your Travel Disaster Stories

As I type this, I am in my tenth hour of sitting in the Dallas Love Field airport, which made me think of this thread. I was supposed to fly back to school after HSNCT at 8 pm on Sunday. There was lightning around the Dallas area, so a lot of flights were being delayed by an hour or two, including m...

Re: Specific question discussion

I'm not qualified to comment on most things, but in the effort to voice more of our positive reactions to questions sets, I just wanted to say how excited I was about the lead-in to the Beethoven 5 tossup. I've had to read Hoffmann's review in both of the music history classes I've taken this year, ...

Re: Question-Specific Discussion

The Handel/Harmonious Blacksmith/courante bonus was on me. From what I've been able to find, the courante in French courts the 17th century was a very slow dance, but courantes of other places/eras are definitely quicker. In hindsight, I definitely should have more specific with what I was describin...

Re: History Bowl/Quizbowl on College Applications

Quizbowl was a pretty sizable part of my apps, for sure. Under the Awards/Honors stuff, I listed my most easily-digestible quizbowl awards (e.g. All-State or anything with a nice title to it). My Common App essay was all about quizbowl, but specifically how I got my school's team to switch from play...

Re: 2014 HSNCT discussion

May I see the tossup on etudes? I buzzed in at some point with "piano etudes" and was eventually ruled incorrect. I don't remember all the clues that I heard, but from what I do remember, the Ligeti and Chopin things mentioned at that point were all for piano. The clue about Gradus ad Parn...

Re: DONTQUIT at Stevenson (IL): MUT mirror on April 5

Thanks to Stevenson for hosting and to Jonah for running this. Despite a few mishaps that happened before the start of the first match, it was overall a pretty well-run tournament.

Re: Illinois '13-'14

Auburn will be the clear favorite to win, with teams like Latin, Fremd, Bloomington, and Springfield duking it out for second place.
As of right now, Fremd will not be attending ATROPHY.

Re: Illinois '13-'14

It’s hard to follow up comments from the esteemed Morgan Venkus, so instead I’ll talk about teams he did not mention (and thus technically ranked below Loyola, which probably isn't what he meant to do.) Wheaton North has pretty consistently been in the top half of the field at most of the major tour...

Re: Illinois '13-'14

It's been at least a month since we've had any sort of discussion, but there have been several tournaments since then, which means that we've had a lot of results to look at. It seems that prior to the start of the tournament season, IMSA A was considered a heavy favorite for the top team in Illinoi...
