Re: The thirty-or-zero problem (80s trash)
Looking at the power stats that got posted in the other thread, a lot of the trash questions were the easiest of the tournament. If "older" trash is a way to keep that stuff in check or line it up closer to rewarding, like, intellectual curiosity, then I am pretty okay with that. Almost a...

Stevenson---For three reasons. 1. They play a lot on the quizbowl circuit. 2. They have had a good coach who will help ...

If you switch the 1s and 3s, and make the top three teams in each bracket 1,2,3, then this would also maximize the chance of being able to start the finals a round earlier.

I think you mean to say they have depth. I don't think Lisle has been fully tested yet since in Illinois, they're at least a tier below Carbondale, and more than a tier below IMSA, Ig, Loyola, OPRF, Stevenson, and Auburn. They almost never choke as favorites (to my knowledge, they've only lost to Ne...

Re: Harvard Fall Mirror at Auburn (12/11/10)
Sorry for not reading Abid's post carefully enough where he said that things might change. My example was outlandish, but it was only intended to be a simple but extreme example of the flaw that teams with a small number of tossups could have a high PPB. However, I don't understand why some people f...

Re: Harvard Fall Mirror at Auburn (12/11/10)
A system is flawed if it would allow a mistake that extreme. It's unlikely that it could happen, but if it does, it would be the worst bracketing mistake in all of history. Other people have brought up more likely scenarios that would also result in mistakes.

What if a team converts one tossup total in the prelims, but 30s the bonus? They'd be 0-5, but wouldn't straight-up PPB put them in the highest bracket?

Re: IMSANITY Distribution Discussion
The only comment I'm making on history is I think that pure history is deserving of 4/4, but the approximate 3/3 at this tournament is good considering that extra math is being added. a) Are reluctant to add in non-academic clues and end up with one-line buzzer beaters and incredibly easy questions....

Re: IMSANITY Distribution Discussion
I don't see the point of the debate on whether or not math is part of science. Math being science does not change anything about the questions. I do think that history is going to be shortchanged at this tournament, but not as much as people think, since RMP and Social Science are sometimes going to...

That set seems to have an odd set of tiebreakers. A modern-day Italian Opera singer isn't that easy, and I think it might be possible for someone to guess "Belgium" early on based on the house of burgundy clue, and then the other person guessing Spain. But that round looks to be an excepti...

I want to say this tournament had the best math I've ever seen in quizbowl. Most questions were only got near the end, but that was more of a result of a lack of experience with good noncomp math. The math was at a level that should be where the good teams and players are at. If more people write ma...

I find that in most sports, people say that there'll be no good players anymore, or that a team is going downhill, every year when they lose their seniors. The replacement for them doesn't come as much from new freshman as it does from their current freshman, sophomores, and juniors improving.
