Re: Encyclopedia Brittanica

just go to Wikipedia or something and make sure you cross-Google whatever you find to ensure it isn't utter bullshit. This was my main problem. It just seems that wikipedia is the only organized place that you don't have to wade through tons of crap to get actual information. So far that has been e...

Re: Encyclopedia Brittanica

All the CCs in florida provide access to numerous online databases, Ethan, and indeed, that comes through LINCCweb, which is NOT useless. I just looked at Chipola's list of databases, and it doesn't appear to have Britannica, but you should ask a librarian just in case. In the meantime, through LIN...

You probably already have access to it through your school.
Is there any way to access it through my home computer, or is it only available at the school?

Any interest in a HS Tournament in NW FL?

We here at Chipola have decided to POSSIBLY run a tournament in the fall. We host an annual NAQT tournament in the spring, but we would like to host another one this fall. It is going to be house written (ACF/NAQT style questions, not the horrible state format,) and we are pretty sure we will be abl...

Re: Writing Literature Tossups

Writer Steve Gerber cites Albert Camus, and especially The Stranger, as his principal influence, particularly upon Howard the Duck (1974-1978): Howard is Mersault with a sense of humor, an existentialist who screams and quacks as a hedge against sinking into utter despair. [6] I wish I could be com...

Re: Writing Literature Tossups

It's not that they are easy that's a problem, since these are acceptable topics for novice college tournaments and whatnot. However, the biggest problem I see lies with your clue selection and writing style. Take the first sentence of your Stranger tossup. For one thing, it is not uniquely identify...

Re: Writing Literature Tossups

The author of this short novel was the second youngest Nobel laureate, only behind Rudyard Kipling, while also being the first African born recipient of the award. In this work, we are introduced to a neighbor who bears an unfortunate resemblance to his dog, and eventually breaks down after losing i...

Re: Returning Community College Players

Faulkner is returning with Russell Harrison, Candace Pyland, Jesse Hayes, Dustin McD, Devon Long, Kenneth, Kayla R, and Walter D. We're getting some crazy good guy on science...according to Sims, but in that case, I don't know if it's reliable. I never got to play against Faulkner (do to my high sc...

Re: Writing Literature Tossups

Thanks that is basically along the lines of what I thought. I tried to write a tossup on The Stranger and the only "hard" clue I could give was on Albert Camus himself and a sentence about Salamono's resemblance to his dog, and it was gotten as soon as I said the name "Salamono,"...

Writing Literature Tossups

I read Jerry's guide to writing good tossups and searched for a definitive answer to the following question, but I could not find it. If it is somewhere in the site and I simply missed it, please send me a link to it. My question: when writing a literature tossup, should the early clue be something ...

Re: Missouri Open discussion

Personally, I believe Prefontaine is a fairly easy bonus, but I am an avid sports fan. I put Prefontaine into the Brian Piccolo area, athletes who did not accomplish much but the media/ American society became enamored by them. When you guys discuss bonus conversion, do you expect every person on ev...

Re: Missouri Open discussion

I had a good time this weekend, these questions were definitely above my skill level, but the tournament itself was ran well by Borglum and Boris (Missouri Open Mirror @Valenica btw.) There was one nearly identical repeat on acids and bases, but that was just one thing, idk if anyone else noticed it.

Although these players may not be as good as the aforementioned D-I players, I would like to make a quick little top 10 for CC players. Note - Some of these may have already graduated. I am making this on my knowledge and experience against them last year. 1. George Berry - JSR - No contest here, an...

Re: Commissioners Academic Challenge

I too participated in the CAC last week, and I must admit that after being pampered with NAQT-style questions, these questions were not well written at all. Being the "lit guy" alluded to in an earlier post by Dallin, it is frustrating to have actual knowledge of an area and be penalized f...

Amidst all of the fiery ICt debates, I was just wondering who was returning to the CC circuit next year? I know Casey from Northeast Alabama is coming back, but besides that I have no clue. I enjoyed playing against you guys and if any of you are returning, I would like to know.
