Re: Wallace Stevens Literature Singles at GMU (3/14/08)
I enjoyed the set a lot. Not surprisingly, the questions were about the best one could ever get at the high school level. So, first of all, thank you to all the writers who contributed to the tournament. I would definitely like to see the lit subject tournament return at next year's WoQ. MARDUK BULL...

Re: NAQT Subject Distribution
Per-tournament distribution isn't a huge problem since, the packet distribution is never off by more than one from the tournament distribution. That is, since lit/myth distribution is 4.81, there should always be 4 or 5 toss ups and 4 or 5 bonuses per packet. The bigger problem is, as I said, that s...

Re: NAQT Subject Distribution
It's less frustrating if you start considering NAQT as a hybrid format. It's not too ridiculous considering that questions in the "academic" distribution often have really trashy answer/clue selection.

Re: Bad Negs--we miss you!
Honestly, it's just a bad question. I don't know why the question writer had to make people play the is-this-a-historical-person-or-is-he-talking-about-"In the Penal Colony" game by not mentioning the actual title (or better, by beginning with plot clues before mentioning the penal colony).

Yeah, I'm sure there are multiple people who founded a penal colony. I'm impressed that someone could come up with Kafka from that clue.

Re: Pronunciation question
The reason these rules exist is that being pedantic about a usually non-existent "correct" pronunciation is the sort of quibbling over side issues that good quizbowl should eschew in favor of focusing on actual content. So I've come to accept that correct/precise pronunciation is not nece...

I've already told you my opinion, but again, I would much prefer 1v1 in the playoffs. For prelims, playing against multiple players seems fine and probably more fun. I don't know if 3 rounds would be enough for a reliable seeding especially since there are more than eight extremely good players in t...

something about justification Fun fact about Shantanu: At least on one occassion, he essentially singlehandedly took down a team including quizbowl luminaries like Guy, Michael W, and George and Todd from Dorman. Given that the Weekend of Quizbowl is the first event of its kind (as far as I know) at the high school, I think it warrants a nebulous prediction thread on its own. Dual participation in high school and college quizbowl?
I believe it's fairly common for a high school student to take college classes for college credit. From what I understand, doing that also makes the student a member of the institution. (For example, if I enroll in UMD class/es next year, apparently, I will receive a student ID and have access to it...

Since there's so much complaint about the SCT set (from what I've seen at the college section), I have a proposal: why not throw away all the bad questions (and/or, even, adjust the distribution . . .) and use less sets but with better questions? I think this would infringe the official NAQT rule, b...

There was a protest over the pronunciation of a certain location. (The best example I can come up with is saying Hokkadio for Hokkaido). This was a good tournament. It was certainly run more smoothly than last year, although I think it would have been better with less down time. We were done with 2 play off rounds around 4:45 (I think). I'm not sure if that's good or bad considering we had 5 rounds of prelims and the 28 question PACE...
