You know, getting the state overly involved in academic competition is not necessarily a good thing. Part of the reason Sue Korosa deserved her Cooper award this year was the role she played in the 80s in rescuing OAC from corrupt state officials who after presiding over unfair, favoritist question ...

A Completely Unscientific Exercise
There's been enough chatter about an online high school poll. Now I'm going to do something about it. Starting this moment, through 12:00 AM Saturday (that is, before NAQT prelims), I'll take emails from registered users of this site listing the top 10 high school teams they've seen. Justifications ...

Certainly NAQT is trying to make an outreach effort. The increase in teams from the Midwest (Iowa, Minnesota) and California/Washington can be seen as proof positive. And I believe New Mexico had their first NAQT State Qualifier this year, courtesy of Mr. Zuffranieri. I'll be interested to see how t...

That was Los Alamitos, when I was a sophomore (the year before TJ had any nationals success). The two guys were named Charles and Brendan, and they pretty much burninated everyone. Charles was a beast and Brendan was very good. A brief googling confirms that this is indeed Charles Meigs of UCLA D2 ...

We generally try to practice twice a week, 2 hours a practice, with material getting more difficult (some college packets) as the year moves on and Nationals draws nearer. We attend anywhere from 12-15 tournaments during our regular season (which is admittedly more than most). We have one coach and ...

Field has now hit 90, only six spots left, I suppose. It seems as if NAQT will be flying in half the college teams in the country for staffing! Out of curiosity, I heard that NAQT prefers to to hold the HSNCT at college and universities becuase of logistical problems at Georgia Tech in 2000. Perhaps...

This sounds very similar to the Deep Bench format of Carleton College's Eric Hillemann (where the preliminaries seed each individual and victory is a matter of total points distributed by seeds and wins) as well, though it might need some modification so as to not take 20+ rounds and last a weekend....

Ohio State's program is in pretty sad shape. They play CBI, I think, and they got owned when they went to NAQT SCT at DePauw a couple of years back. I hear it's mainly an organizational problem; they can't find an advisor worth a damn. To prevent this thread from being hijacked by Ohio people, I'm c...

No. Kill their egos with ACF Nationals packets. In practice once last year, TJ A ~75, TJ B ~30. I said kill their egos, not their desire to play quizbowl. Getting my team to practice ACF Fall is like pulling teeth (and ACF Fall itself is sufficient practice for NAQT and PACE nationals). I enjoy it,...

At this point, I'm pretty sure Caltech's gonna be it.
I sat in on their quizbowl practice and played a few ICT packets with some of the team. If you are a high school player who has notions of being immediately dominant in college just like you were in HS, kill your thread of an ego with ICT packets.

18 teams competed in the second edition of the Comet Classic Invitational. The top 4 teams from each 9-team preliminary bracket advanced to the playoffs.
