Re: QBDB thread
Something seems off with the categorization for bonuses. Specifically, I was categorizing the first three packets of 2006 Atzlan Cup and the TUs worked but none of the bonuses show a category...

Re: VCU Winter High School Tournament: December 13, 2008
wow, I don't check the forum for 24 hours and it devolves to a discussion of my HS career... Cameron did not play for Cosby at GSAC last week since he wrote many of the questions, more than most of our own players, I might add. I think he takes a class there. I believe he said he was taking two clas...

Re: VCU Winter High School Tournament: December 13, 2008
Quick results:
1 MLWGS
2 Cosby
3 Freeman
4 New Kent A
I didn't here how the second bracket turned out, but the "Finals" match was actually a tiebreaker between Cosby and Freeman for the PACE bid.

Re: QBDB thread
Wow, this seems like it could be really useful. Any suggestions on what difficulty rankings should mean? (i.e., is there some kind of scale we can apply to ACF Fall and Penn Bowl alike?)

Re: New Trier Varsity 12/20 (IL)
I may be wrong, but I will enter here as an mACF player/writer/editor in the middle ground and say that the state series distribution here, if used properly could be ok, if not useful. If I read correctly (not sure I do), you could have a round of: 6/6 Science: 2/1 Biology, 1/1 Chemistry, 2/2 Physic...

Even if I have to write 4 packets worth, I would really like to see this happen.MLWGS-Gir wrote: I'm planning to do my best on getting a lot of our younger players at peer-editing next year (and of course for HAVOC, if it occurs).

Re: GSAC XVI: December 6, 2008
Clues that people aren't buzzing on give them an opportunity to learn, and thus the ability to get better. The reductive form of this is reading two-line tossups to the worst teams in the field, which is clearly not what anyone wants to be doing. Sorry, I didn't see your response before I started t...

Re: GSAC XVI: December 6, 2008
Maybe Breughel wouldn't be converted in as many rooms as it should be, but I think that toss up conversion is overrated. Obviously, the point of pyramidal questions is that everyone can play on them, but if you can't even toss up any answer as obscure as Breughel in the preliminaries, the answer sp...

Re: GSAC XVI: December 6, 2008
While Adam did beat me to that little Nassar fact I had been double-checking, I would just like to second Ted's comments on the Woolf question as probably true of a decent portion of questions on creators (I find the same to be true with artist and philosopher TUs as well) I have heard in the past y...

Re: GSAC XVI: December 6, 2008
Following Cosby A yesterday proved to me the need for a solution to the whole top teams-average teams stratification in high school quizbowl: namely, the obvious response of decreasing bonus difficulty and TU answer choice to help average teams get tossups at the end and have PPBs of at least 6 or 7...

So despite that last loss, has Maggie Walker won enough important games (e.g. TJ A, WJ, Hunter, the list goes on) that we're finally calling 2010 Nationals as Quint initially claimed??

Re: GSAC XVI: December 6, 2008
It's just my opinion, but I think Cosby deserves a moderator discount and free question set in return for my services. (which, in case I haven't been clear can include reading, scorekeeping, moderating, protest-managing etc plus those two packets I wrote.) P.S. Once I finish sending in questions, I ...

I didn't even plan on playing originally, but that was a great experience (although I apparently took on my teammates' three negs in my stat line, but whatever). It was great to play on that diverse team and to see almost every college player I know.

Re: Zot Bowl/Truman State/VCU Novice Discussion
I'll go ahead and give another Pension Grillparzer opinion: overall I thought the set was fine and definitely served my purposes (i.e. applying what we have learned at VCU's summer practice to high school nationals level material) More importantly it gave us (Maggie Walker Students) to have a chance...

Alright, I definitely agree that distribution needs to be changed quite a bit as it may have greatly affected some rather important games if some questions were a bit more balanced and/or academic. I would say that repeats are probably not worth worrying about as they're bound to happen, but one avo...

Maggie Walker definitely enjoyed today, which was full of very close games. 13 games is almost unheard of on the high school circuit and it was a great chance to rematch a couple of our close matches. Clearly we have some work to do if we want to continue playing against these teams, but in our defe...

If no one minds, I would like to revive this thread to take TJ and UVa, where almost all of the above powers played each other, into account. I'll refer anyone interested to read Swissboy's response to my disappointment with their roster in the TJIAT forum, but I hope if this tournament is added to the rankings, I definitely support Immaculate Deception's plan to acco...

To represent a team from the bottom half of the tournament, I thought the tournament went well, save only things to be expected with a new TD. I won't bother to comment on these as they have already been mentioned and GSAC will be in the same position this year without Mehdi. My team enjoyed the day...
