Re: Improving my Team
In another thread, you said that you were interested in qualifying for some national tournament. I would advise you to stop playing on "open" teams, as the rules for any of the national tournaments state that you have to qualify with a team composed of students from entirely one school. I ...

Re: Solon's Two Day NAQT/PACE Tournament-Feb.14/15
Well thanks for the compliment. I had asked to be put into JV but it seems like stones became the third bracket, as St. Charles entered it in the afternoon. I guess I need to find another tournament that might qualify me. Which nationals are you trying to qualify for? If you want to go to the PACE ...

Re: Improving my Team
I assume that you were one of the two people from Village Academy who showed up to Ohio State's From Here to Eternity tournament. It also appears that your school had a team that went to the two-day tournament at Solon, and one or two other tournaments this year, however, your team name is often in ...

Re: Village Academy Tournament 3/21
I hope that you are not planning to run this as a timed tournament, because if you are, I'd probably not get to an acceptable number of questions in time. So, is this tournament happening on 3/7 like the NAQT website says, or on 3/21?

I will be willing to help out at your tournament, if necessary. Also, it says on the NAQT website the the tournament is going to be on 3/7.

In addition, Northmont seems to be a team on the rise as the players are getting more experience throughout the year. They only lost to a Shady Side team with Charlie Rosenthal on it by 15. I moderated for Northmont at New Trier Varsity - they've definitely got some talent. I would like to note tha...

While the Ohio board has been going haywire, I believe there was a post that said that this tournament is short on moderators. Apparently, there is a field of 36 on Saturday, 32 on Sunday and only 6 moderators signed up, if the message was accurate.

Re: Ohio '08-09
Well, the Ohio board has been acting strange the past few days. Anyway, if you live anywhere in proximity to the Cleveland area, the Solon two-day tournament this coming weekend is short on moderators. As far as those preseason predictions go, they were pretty accurate, as the teams that were expect...

Re: Byko Rankings 2008-2009
At Ohio State's From Here to Eternity tournament, the JV teams played on the same questions as the varsity. Also, the teams in that division were kept with the numbering from the varsity; i.e. if a team had two varsity and two JV teams, the varsity would be 1 and 2, and the JV would be 3 and 4.

Re: Getting coaches to care
I am wondering if some of the newer coaches don't know about the existence of some of these other tournaments. In Ohio, at the beginning of every tournament, there is a time at the player/coach meeting devoted to schools promoting their upcoming tournaments, regardless of format. I would think that ...

I just would like to mention one thing to the teams that participate in this tournament and aren't familiar with the campus- Scott Lab is an ultramodernly-designed building that is really two buildings connected by a bunch of catwalks. These catwalks connect floor n to floor (n+1) and floor (n-1), b...

Re: Byko Rankings 2008-2009
Yeah, I was wondering why it was that you had 127 teams from Missouri, and 197 from Ohio when until you updated some Illinois stuff, no other state had more than 50. I know that Greg Bossick and Charlie Dees are good at getting lots of participation from many schools in their states, but I thought t...

Re: Ohio NAQT State Championship (April 25, 2009)
I realize that I probably agreed to moderate and/or scorekeep at this tournament this past weekend, but something that I thought was a different weekend was actually that one. If a)the tournament is double elimination, or b)the tournament is over by 4:30, I'll still be able to show up and moderate/s...

Our team is pretty average, and we find that ACF questions are NOT impossible. By pretty average, I mean that at the 2007 SCT, our DI S-value was 30th out of 63 and our DII S-value was 39th out of 93. And we were able to do that despite practicing and studying off of fossilized MLK/NAQT SCT question...

Gauging interest in a tournament at Ohio State in the fall
The Ohio State University Academic Team was thinking about hosting a fall warmup HS tournament. The potential date for this would be 10/27/07. We will probably be using the NAQT ISA questions. We would like to get 16-24 teams to show up, as most buildings that would have more rooms available are bei...

I agree that that tournament really sucked. I'm kind of jealous of the Florida team as they can get funding for non-CBI tournaments. One of the topics brought up earlier was why 14 Division I teams didn't show up. In our case, we had originally finished 4-8 at the SCT. Ohio didn't really have any NAQT tournaments until after I graduated high school, so for us, winning the OAC state tournament and going to the PAC (Ohio, at least at the time, didn't do all-star teams) was the big thing that pretty much every team in the state aimed for.
