A few more thoughts while I'm writing my list. I think mainstream/general accessiblity (to players overall) can trump significance in extreme cases. Everyone's heard of the people in your first list. I'm a pretty decent generalist, and I never would have heard of anyone on your second list (except B...

There are bunch of pet peeves that I could probably come up with given more time, but off the top of my head, two things that annoy the hell out of me are the overemphasis on Herman Melville and William Dean Howells. Melville is damned important, but tossups on obscurata like Mardi, Pierre, and Redb...

Grad School / Post-College Plans For Seniors et al.
Inspired by the thread about HS seniors' college plans and my own having sent in all but one of my law school apps (damn your extra "optional" essay, Duke!), I thought it would be interesting to get a survey of what all the seniors and other grad school applicants were looking at doing nex...

Mid-Atlantic results from Rutgers-Newark: Prelims featured a 9 team round robin; I'm not 100% of all the records, so I didn't list the ones I was unsure of. The results were: 1. Princeton A, 8-0 2. Swarthmore A, 6-2 3. Rutgers-NB, 5-3 4. Jeff Bennett playing solo, 5-3 5. Delaware A, 5-3 6. CUNY (Fre...

Chris- send me an email tonight. I didn't mean to seem hasty, it's just that a) I have to give the student activities people advance notice as to whether or not I was going to cancel or host, b) I had no packet swap options or promised submissions from any mirror teams to fall back on, and c) even w...

Thanks to Maryland for hosting what proved to be a fun and competitive tournament. It was good to see how balanced the competition in the Mid-Atlantic is, as each team lost to at least 2 others, and I'm looking forward to seeing another solid year of tournaments in the region. My one critique for fu...

I recall you mentioning something along those lines to me, though I didn't know Pitt had actually left and was more under the impression that they were considering leaving and would not object to a final match replacing their own one with you. Regardless of the time concerns, which did pose an issue...

Brief Cornell Results
9 teams went to Cornell's 2004 tournament. The initial format was a single round robin, which ended with Michigan A finishing 8-0, Pitt at 7-1, Princeton A at 6-2, Rochester A at 5-3, and the rest I can't remember off hand. Afterwards, the top 5 and bottom 4 teams were placed in seperate brackets fo...

Hi all, Just a reminder that the first packet deadline for Princeton's fall tournament, the Kickboxer Classic (to be held Saturday, November 6) is coming up on September 17th. I'll sign on with your concerns. It would be nice to hear more about Terrapin since we're pretty much a lock to attend. I was surprised no Mid-Atlantic team bid on ACF Fall. I'd consider placing a bid, but it occurs on Princeton's fall break, so there would be no way to staff the tournament sufficie...

Assuming Zeke, Yaphe, and Subash are really retired (which obviously is always in doubt): Michigan is probably #1 at this point. Kemezis is very good, and even though I was too wasted to remember 75% of CO, I know from being on Lafer's team that he pretty much proved he can be the base for a top tie...

Grammar, etc. in packets
Having just participated in reading/hearing a few recently-released packets in the QB chatroom (I'll leave the names out, though anyone else who saw can share), I have to say I'm pretty perturbed at the lack of attention that was given to basic English structure, grammar, punctuation etc in the edit...

Buzzerfest packets available to public
Zip file available here: http://www.princeton.edu/~cbowl/bz2004/Buzzerfest%202004.zip Based on both my editing intentions and the comments I recieved, I believe this set is a pretty good example of a mid-level difficulty set (between ACF Fall and ACF Regionals level) which might be a good reference ...

I voted for Hentzel et al, but after hearing that Yaphe/Litvak may likely play with Hoppes/Teitler, I'd put them in first instead. My predictions for the top of the order are: 1. Yaphe/Litvak 2. Hentzel et al 3. Weiner/Illinois Then I see a noticeable dropoff with a bunch of teams (Wesley/Matt C., C...

Re: The Obvious
The biggest problems with CBI are the awful question style and the irritating faux-decorum, neither of which haunt Trash. Not to derail the thread (move it if necessary), but ,well I have to say that I still have the same resentments with TRASH (and maybe not all Trash tournaments, but most). The q...

What exactly is ACUI and what does it actually do/mean for it to be such a deciding factor for so many schools? My thoughts are as follows: I would not count CBI and TRASH as experience since they operate outside of the established circuit for the most part. Also you shouldn't count high school, since high school experience can range vastly depending on where one went to high school. For example, the D2 team ...

Our decision to decline came down to three factors: 1. Money. Our winter high school tournament, which annually raises about $5000, completely fell through due to weather-related cancellations, so our budget was reduced to the remnants of our spring tournament earnings (~$1000 or so). Had we not hos...

I didn't vote either. Ideally: PACE would keep its basic format and question creating philosophy, though I think it could use some work in organizational aspects, which could help with things like producing multiple sets instead of only NSC. NAQT needs to get back to its academic roots and ditch mos...

As the main opposing party in the argument that inspired this thread, and someone with a pretty solid background in classical music (though I dislike much of Beethoven, save his violin concerto) I have to say that while this answer would be reasonable for the hard part of a bonus, I think it would b...
