All-State/All-Star Selections

The very exciting addition of the 2010 All-Star Tournament pushes the question of All-State/All-Star selection processes to the forefront of my mind. I saw how this was done in Illinois when I coached there, but Wisconsin and Indiana (the other two states I coached in) did not have All-State/All-Sta...

Re: HSAPQ National All Star Academic Tournament in 2010

This looks like a great tournament! I'll get together with Ben Dillon to get the ball rolling on the Indiana All-State selection process (something we maybe should be doing anyway!). This tournament surely can't move forward without representation from the quizbowl powerhouse state of Indiana!

Re: April 29: Pre-Nationals Goldfish Championship

I agree with BJ on the oddness of having two difficult TUs to start... We were a bit rattled and then missed a relatively easy Hemingway novel question on TU3 just because getting things wrong felt right at that point (my interpretation). After that we settled down quite a bit.

I found a major error in one of the first 24 questions that affected our team, but we feel shouldn't be penalized (we negged) as the question had a piece of false information. DCDS buzzed in with "Oslo" on the hint that Al Gore won his Nobel Prize in this city. The question was looking fo...

Yeah, the best thing to do would be to either cut costs somewhere(You could probably cobble together enough laptops for a paperless tournament), run all packets on a two-day basis(8 rounds Friday, 8 rounds Saturday) or call this off and donate the rooms and readers for a worthy quizbowl-related cau...

Re: Fri 5/29: Midwest Championship near Chicago-O'Hare

$40 for just 5 games is still pretty exorbitant, dude. NAQT gets $163.00 of the money for providing the questions ($35 flat fee + 8*$16), and I need to make around a 1000 copies so every team can get a full set of questions (16 packets each, which cost $35 when purchased online). Re: Fri 5/29: Midwest Championship near Chicago-O'Hare

I'm going to stick with the 4 PM start time. If people are worried about going too late, I'd rather cut a couple of rounds and finish at 6:30 PM or 7:00 PM (two four team RR, rebracket top two and bottom two for a total of five matches). If we do this, I will reduce the fee by $10 to $80 {-$40 if yo...

I figured being done by 8:30 PM addressed the fatigue issue, but maybe I misunderestimated the stamina of high schoolers. Would this be a different proposition for DCDS )and others) if we:

A. Started earlier?
B. Played fewer matches?
C. All of the above?

I seriously wonder whether in 8 or so years, NAQT will be viewed as this board currently sees CBI and the like. If we really want to look 8 years into the future, I think a very different picture will emerge. Looking BACK eight years will make clear where the trendline is going. In 2001, NAQT HSNCT...

You have to read associated bonuses in order to make sure that I am comparing apples with apples, i.e. every team who wins question #9 gets bonus #9, otherwise the head-to-head comparisons don't make sense as it would be unclear which bonus to assign to a won TU.
