Re: What Time Should Tournaments End?
If a hish school tournament ends after 6:00 without there being some sort of extenuating circumstances (eg 17 rounds, disappearing moderators), something has gone wrong. Hell, an NAQT game takes less than 20 minutes. You should be able to get in 2.5 or 3 games an hour. The fewer convocations there a...

I would totally go, but I have a cross country meet on that day, and since one of our other captains is already skipping out to take the SAT, I feel honor bound to show up.
Send me emails anyways. I love getting email.

Re: How Often/When Does Your Team Practice?
I think that practice decreases in importance as you age/improve. As a new player, it is important to figure out what you know, learn how the questions work, and learn how to buzz. I think practice is most important when you use it as a place to work on recall, buzzing on clues you know, and as a pl...

Damn, you all are lucky. Due to mandatory athletics and MANGA CLUB (which I am thankfully not a member of), we have literally 45 minutes of practice a week. Our better players have worked considerably outside of school, which is arguably more valuable. I'm going to try to insititute occasional weeke...

Most of Western PA plays Hometown High Q, a television show structured like It's Academic, hosted by the utterly incomparable Ken Rice, but there are a few teams who try NAQT (most notably North Allegheny and Sewickley). Asking both title questions and author questions rewards more diverse types of knowledge and improves accessibility. Privileging understanding of meaning over plots, plots over character names, an...

Re: Is high school quizbowl in Missouri salvageable?
As far as slush fund creation goes, I think a benefit concert or dinner of some sort would work well. To me, the best way to influence the Missouri people would be an appearance en masse at one of their meetings. Once we put a face to these internet ideas, things could become a lot easier. Throughou...

Re: Is high school quizbowl in Missouri salvageable?
What reason do they have to change? Ideally, the idea of good competition and higher learning should be enough, but hundreds of high schoolers have no choice but to enjoy their product, and, to them, the only people who seem to really want a change are a bunch of random people on the internet.

I love Mr. Tressler's idea to give everyone two losses, because, basically, playing is better than not playing. However, I think it could end up being a little bit unwieldy, but that would only be a worst case scenario and it would require some gross human error. Would that be feasible, Mr. Hentzel?...

Re: Using a tape recorder
Jack's idea isn't too bad. As I see it, the main problem is, as Ted stated, the lack of context. However, the tape recorder could be really useful for either new players or for people who are weak in things that require some binary memorization. I personally find that making and using flashcards wor...

Re: 08-09 Pre-Season Poll Results - Congratulations Charter!
I think this could be the year of teams with one really good player doing well. The top teams (with the exception of Dorman) all seem to have an overpoweringly good player and a solid supporting cast, as opposed to 4 above average players (correct me if I'm wrong). Hunter has Guy, WJ has Daichi, Cha...

Re: Quiz bowl: spectator or participant sport?
Quiz bowl is primarily a participant sport. This is basically because once you get to the HSNCT level most average people have no idea what any of the answers are. People don't like when they appear dumb. This is why the old-timey CBI questions would be absurd hoses. Basically, people like feeling s...

One has to be vain in moderation. It would be fine for Charles to toss in an occasional Uzbekistan question, but if every packet includes a question on Central Asia, it is definitely too much. Basically, don't overdo it.

First, I shall pimp my state. Pennsylvania won't be all that good. State College should be somewhat competitive nationally, as Ruilong and Ben are both quite good. I think it depends on how big your school is. If it has a gajillion quiz bowlers (read: Charter), then it is perfectly OK to stratify practices. Basically, if you have a lot of people, it is your call as to how to run practice. If your school is small (read: us), then it just isn't feasible. I think...

I must second Andy here. There are 4 good PA teams (States A and B, Moravian, and us). We murder pretty much everyone else. You are lucky to have Charter around. They are a strong team and they show up to stuff. We get to murder Kane and Rocky Grove.

As a current student at a private school with dying quiz bowl, I think I can offer a good composite point of view. Shady Side had a brief period of being insanely good (2005-2006). That was my freshman year and Andy's junior year. We were 5th at HSNCT. A ton of people showed up at tryouts that year....

I think that you must be relatively lenient. For example, The Night Watch, Night Watch, De Nachtwacht, and The Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem de Ruytenburch should all be acceptable for the Rembrandt painting. There must be restraint. However, incorrect transalations should be just that: i...
