We didn't get to play on it, but how in the world is a bonus on chess players a good idea? I get that Kasparov is gettable, but who else other than Fischer at this level? Maybe as a screw you hard part Spassky, but that's it. Jeff, what category was this put in? Anand is pretty well known being the...

Re: Welcome to the 2010 SCT discussion.
I liked most of the history in the set, but I was sad at the lack of China in the DI set from what I heard from the DI team. However, I felt there were some crazy things in the science. For example, in one round in DII, there was a tossup on the Rydberg equation and bonus later in that same round ha...

Re: Japanese Names
Japanese and Chinese (and Hungarian and Javanese and any other relevant naming scheme) names should be treated the same as other names. For example, the point is absolutely right that, under any sensible system of answer accepting, that execrable question on Chiang Kai-shek's son should have prompt...

Re: Japanese Names
One rule I don't quite understand is why for many Chinese names, the answer line often only contains the last name. For example, at ACF Fall, there was a bonus part on Chiang Kai-shek's son, Chiang Chin-kuo. [10] This president of Taiwan succeeded his father as chairman of the Kuomintang in 1975 and...

I think there can be a bit more European history, as that is a very common topic in High School, at the cost of some American History (which I think is a bit overrepresented).

Re: ACF Winter discussion
This was demonstrative of the lack of old history (Roman/Greek/ancient Near East) in this tournament, which I felt was pretty abysmal. I remember only Darius I, Thutmose III, Peisistratus. Perhaps my site just read all the packets without these things, but having only 3 tossups on old stuff in 11 r...

Re: ACF Winter discussion
I thought this was a pretty good tournament, but the country tossups for lit got annoying fast (especially Iceland). I liked how most of the bonuses had very accessible easy parts that most everyone could get 10 points on. I felt the USCD + Penn packet had a bit too much modern history questions. It...

Hey everyone, As I said over in the Rube thread, we hit capacity for our field. The MSU team is still rebuilding, and we feel that a field of 36 is good for this tournament. We are going to be hosting tournament in March and April, and I'll let you know soon about those. We are going to set ourselv...

Re: Michigan '09-'10
DCD beat CC at our tourney back in November. After a few months, it's clear the top teams in the state are: 1. DCD 2. CC A 3. Novi A There's lot's of other solid teams in the state, but right now these 3 stand out. DCD is the best, but on a bad day are vulnerable to lose to CC A. CC is clearly the ...

Re: Michigan Autumn Classic (12/05/09)
According to the NAQT website, that round had 20 tossups read. I'm sorry to intrude in this conversation, but I found that according to this http://www.naqt.com/stats/team-performance.jsp?team_id=11192 the number of questions in the round would have to be at least 22. We would never know how many q...

Re: Michigan '09-'10
This discussion kind of died. After 2 tournaments, I think we've gotten a feel for the top teams in the state. These are my thoughts. I think DCDS is probably the best in the state at the moment. Yesterday, at Autumn Classic, they defeated DCC A pretty soundly 475-290. Though, they did lose Novi Wil...

Re: Is this a BLITZ or not?
Sorry if I'm hijacking the thread, but I have a relevant question about blitzing. I've always wondered whether or not blizting is possible in any non-literature/arts situations. For example if a history question said "This man fought at Pavia" would it be alright to say as your answer both...

Also, one packet seemed to have heavy amounts of 30 Year's War stuff as in having a tossup on Peace of Westphalia and a bonus on the Dutch revolution that merged into the 30 Year's War. Yes, and the bonus mentioned the Peace of Westphalia. If I recall correctly, the bonus followed the tossup in my ...

Re: ACF Fall Midwest at UChicago
Like everyone before me, I thought the bracketing was weird. However, I thought the tournament went pretty smoothly in general and was pretty well organized. The two rooms that were in the other building weren't too much of a problem either. Overall, it was a pretty fun tournament.

Apparently this set was very lazy in terms of providing alternate answers. Making the occasional mistake and leaving off answers is no big deal, but doing it consistently over an entire set is a big problem. Writing questions is about making them as playable as possible, and part of that is making ...

I have to agree with David.
Also, having played both teams, I gotta say DCC B was better than Novi A. This coming year, though, I can't be sure of.

A quick comment on a small error that I found in one of the bonuses. He was the half-brother of Constantine the Great. ANSWER: Julian the Apostate or...

I think DCC, Novi, and DCD are gonna dominate this year, but that doesn't seem like much of a surprise.
DeWitt's coach seems really hardcore, as far as I saw. I'll wait and see on them :)
