I like the double round-robin prelims too. hell, if we want to spend all day playing, why not have a giant, 16 team round robin for the prelims, and a small(teams with only 1-2 losses?) playoff?

I might note that this also could be a problem in artist/composer tossups(a student who has never looked at the Ghent Altarpeice or Arnolfini Marrage but happens to have heard "an Annunciation sold by stalin to andrew mellon" beating someone who does not know that fact but is very familiar...

One other idea is to look at what people are using for givaways and write tossups on those. That way, you can vary your answer selection and still be assured that they are convertible another idea- at packet submission tournaments, let player who are new to writing know how their packet could be imp...

Idea for encouraging idependent tournaments: First, deal with MSHSAA restrictions on competition. Then, offer schools the oppourtunity to obtain questions for their tournaments for reduced cost. remeber, this is a state where the basic principles of good question writing are little known(compared to...

Re: Your Philosophy of Quizbowl
Bravo. I would like to add only that if people tried to introduce rules into sports that gave a mediocire team an advantage/plurality over good teams, other people would be up in arms. So why do people treat quizbowl differently? God knows it's not boring to watch, at least if you understand how the...

Re: Is high school quizbowl in Missouri salvageable?
I will concur with MLWGS-gir. Quizbowl is fundamentally a different game from the sort that I am strating to feel that Missouri wants to foist on people who want to play quizbowl. quick take Sports-designed with flash and excitemnt for the spectator in mind. Hence, single-elim(to raise the stakes of...

Re: Is high school quizbowl in Missouri salvageable?
Lee- missouri's problem to me is the competition restrictions. If your (insert crappy local format) lets you do whatever you want in addition to it, then it can possibly coexist with good quizbowl. Of course, if these are starting to develop in alabama, than I urge you and anyone you can get on your...

Possibly there are some variances in the roman and greek tradition(say, hypothetically having ulysses sail off into the sunset right after defeating the suitors.) and between other analogous traditons.

Re: Answer Selection
When writing questions about fine arts, try to vary your answers a little. It does sometimes feel like 19th century french art is overemphaized. Also, it might be worth it to try writing common-link tossups, since those can more easily include clues about works that don't come up enough. edit:grammar.

Re: Gunpei Discussion
The art was probably more skewed to my interests than it should have been. Since I just finished an art course on the late 18th and early 19th centuries, I initially wrote a lot of tossups on that period, resulting in some pretty hard stuff on people like Landseer and Falconet, plus an overall Fren...

If anyone manages to take material from our packets and make millions off of it, I think that should suffice t...

I had Whitman at 22 because of pretty much the same reason as Charlie. Re: NAQT and the Dead Zone (ETC moved from Nationals)
I'll concur with Guy and Sarah, and I will add that the reason that Fine arts and the other lesser academic categories(ie, RMP and whatever I'm forgetting) are rarer and more sensitve to quirks of distribution is proabably the trash and less academic categories getting too much space. And Hentzel, I...

Re: NAQT and the Dead Zone (ETC moved from Nationals)
So that's where the architecture tossups have been going. Mabye they try to distribute evenly in the dead zone(so no one subject has more than a 1-2 in the dead zone) and art history/fine arts is hit harder because there are fewer to begin with. Did you see if there were any other patterns in the de...

Re: Actual Discussion of HSQuizbowl/Kidder podcasts
I think part of the problem with the sciences is that it is not as easy to figure out what to study as with other areas. with lit and the arts, for instance, the You Gotta Know lists can be used to pinpoint the most-quizzed works, and these can be subjected to more in-depth study. If you were to pic...
