They not only beat but trounced teams in three Indiana tournaments this year, solidly beating both Culver Academies (HSNCT #57) and Penn (HSNCT #97). What kind of tournaments were these victories in? Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota are also crowning champions this weekend, which hopefully will reduce the wait list significantly. Updates on those are eagerly awaited. Indiana's champ this weekend is Culver Academies, who's already in the field. That should bring the next team in off the waitlist.

Presumably, you would offer this format because deep knowledge would be rewarded on the longer pyramidal tossups and you would hope that the deep knowledge rewarded on the long tossups with more points would still win out over the quick recall sectio...

Another note: Modern quiz bowl is moving away from computation tossups because it's nigh near impossible to write them pyramidally. Tying together the tossups with the bonuses would eliminate computation bonuses as well, but many still consider them kosher because bonuses don't have to be pyramidal.

IMHO, I don't think it's helpful to set a dollar amount. For (ridiculous) example, a buzzer discount of $1 against an entry fee of $1000 wouldn't be an incentive to bring a system.
