Re: Question-specific discussion: 2016 Division II SCT

The tossup on Judges in round 9 has a major error. The Book of Joshua precedes it, but the tossup says it follows it. That produced a neg in our room. Also, I don't know if this is something that's considered acceptable by the quizbowl community at large and just struck me as weird, but there were a...

Re: ACF Regionals 2016 Individual Question Discussion

There was a bonus which mentioned artwork found on Swiss money in the lead-in, and then asked for Switzerland as the second part of the bonus. Yeah, that was weird. I don't remember which packet this was, but I remember the answerlines were Walking Man/Switzerland/Cartier-Bresson if that helps in f...

My comment above was a throwaway joke, although common sense should prevail if you're trying to wear a fedora or similar and you're under the age of 60. I would never presume to deny Borglum, Bruce Arthur, Joel Gluskin, etc. their signature lids. So you're telling me I shouldn't show up wearing my ...

Our team had a good time playing this set. The only thing I remember offhand was that I thought the Underground Railroad tossup was kind of wonky. I don't know what the correct noun to use would be, but describing it as "this organization" just didn't feel right to me. I'll take a look through the p...

I don't think anybody kept score but scores for the Renaissance art packet will hopefully be reconstructed shortly. The packet itself is attached. EDIT: Itamar won, with 85 points! Itamar: 4/3/1 - 85 Jordan: 4/1/0 - 70 Doug (played 17 questions): 3/2/1 - 60 Will: 1/2/0 - 35 Ryan: 0/0/1, but we gave...

Even Behemoth might be okay, but then you have Satan/Woland and "set in 20th century Moscow" still in power. Yeah, it seems like if you know a single character name from the book, you get power. So yeah, I guess the point's been made. Even though it was played on by good teams, IMO that's still too...

But at its core, if you're a science specialist and you're losing questions to the other team's science specialist or their central generalist. Basically, try to never lose tossups in your category to a generalist. Generalists have a lot to focus on, and specializing in categories gives you many ad...

How do you describe quizbowl to someone unfamiliar with it?

I've thought about this a bit lately, especially as I prepare to go off to a college where there is currently no quizbowl team and I hope to start one. When I tell people I play quizbowl, a lot of people ask me "what is that?" And I, not having the time to give them an in-depth explanation, result t...
