Michigan (as you probably know) has a very active quiz bowl circuit and plays several formats. Get in touch with Tony McHattie at White Cloud High School, he can give you a lot of good advice about quiz bowl in rural schools and he runs an excellent tournament every year in October. Good luck!

re Chip: I'm not saying we need to legitimize Chip's or any other tournaments, I'm simply saying that if you want a true national organiztion then you can't afford to alienate two major quiz bowl states, many of whose members happen to play Chip's tournaments.

I think a lot of what you're feeling can be attributed to the NAQT format. Consider: whoever gets the tossup totally controls the bonus. The bonuses can be (perceptively) really hard or really easy to Team X, and vice-versa for Team Y. Luck of the bonuses can make a lot of difference.

I have never been to a PACE tournament, but have seen their questions and have only heard great things about them. However, and with all due respects to Dr. Chuck, I think that in terms of forming a national organization, I don't think it's a good idea to align ourselves with any specific tournament...
