Re: 2013 HSNCT discussion

Could you please post that tossup on alcohols? I think it was in round 13.

Re: 2013 NAC

So just don't send anyone at all next year...? I doubt we will; given that we might not be attending the mod. jeopardy tournament next year, we will definitely not be paying to go to NAC. Also, the only reason anyone went this year was because one intrepid sophomore felt like being the captain for ...

Re: 2013 NAC

In the JV division, Fossil Ridge JV A beat High Tech 255-240. Congrats to them for what I heard was a well fought game. That being said, I would like to point out our NAC story, which I hope will restore some people’s faith in humanity. Our school plays a modified jeopardy tournament every year (it’...

How to Buzz

I've never figured out the proper way to buzz, just because the types of buzzers are so variable. There's handheld buzzers, box buzzers, tiny button buzzers. I've seen players use their thumbs, index fingers, tables, and heads (with less than satisfactory results). Some people hold the buzzers, some...

Re: Steps to Conquering the Math Canon?

There's nothing wrong with your approach, it's just that the topics you study are not applicable to the high school canon. There's really no way a regular difficulty tournament can toss up anything related to topology or abstract algebra and expect a high conversion rate. That's why you always see t...

Re: 2013 NAQT New Jersey State Championship at Princeton 4/20/13

Shouldn't High Tech B have qualified for HSNCT because we were third overall?

Re: New Jersey NASAT Try-Outs in April

What will the actual structure of the tryouts be? Will it be purely tossups, or can we find a way to work in bonuses?

Re: Question-specific discussion

Could you post the tossup about the white dwarf in packet 1 and the bonus with Dijkstra's algorithm? The latter caused a bit of confusion in our room because nobody really knows how to say the guy's name. Maybe include some pronunciation key with the question?

Re: KPAQT III Long Island, NY. March 23, 2013

High Technology High School would like to register 2 teams for this tournament. We are bringing 1 buzzer system, but can provide up to 5 if necessary.

Re: Nature of Studying

Hemoglobin, keratin, actin, myosin, insulin, glucagon, ATP synthase, GFP, antibodies, von Willebrand factor, histones, and the sodium/potassium pump are all feeling really sad right now. Again, I agree, saying collagen is the only protein that comes up was dumb, but it was meant to serve as an exam...

Re: Nature of Studying

Ok, first of all, to Max, ouch, that was a little mean. I did just get into quizbowl this year, and I am obviously not an expert on the subject. However, please don't belittle me for using word association to answer questions; it is a legitimate, albeit inconsistent, strategy. Just because you can g...

Re: Nature of Studying

As someone who specializes only in the two topics discussed here (science and philosophy), and has taken part in both science bowl and quizbowl over the years, I would just like to put my two cents in. Let's start with philosophy. When I first began studying for philosophy, I would only memorize the...

Re: ProtoBowl

Time spent reading those tossups multiple times is time not spent reading books and learning things. True, but for me, a science specialist, getting a lit background is easier to accomplish with questions, rather than reading the books themselves. I know ignoring deep knowledge is usually frowned u...

Re: ProtoBowl

I love Protobowl (it's boosted my PPG by at least 50 since I started this year), but is there any intention of adding new questions? There are many housewritten packets out there not uploaded on the website (IMSANITY, LIST, etc.), and while it seems unlikely, I have gone through the 17k+ questions m...
