Minor little quibble, but in case my school administration sees and gets livid, it's Western Albemarle without the "r" in the middle. Also, still baffled as to how playing no tournaments as a team except VHSL for the last 6 months can have us ranked, but I'll take it I suppose.

I just got home, so my remarks will be short, but a very hearty congratulations to every team that competed today, and huge congratulations go to New Kent, who ran undefeated through AA to win their first title. This was a great experience and a great way to send off the last year of the VHSL system...

I think the VHSL sets would probably be best for these, as they're of manageable difficulty and the rules are simple to understand, probably simpler than the four-quarter history bowl sets.

There's no surefire way to tell whether a question is in power or not. You can estimate it by knowing how long every question in that tournament set is and the general location of power marks within that set, but they are pretty variable within 2 sentences, so the best way is probably to guess somet...

A notebook to keep track of all of the ones you hear of would be helpful. Later on, after the competition or practice, go online and research the ones you missed or didnt get quickly enough, taking notes on them for review as well. That might help (although I'm not a wonderful lit player, mind you).

Unfortunately, this seems to happen quite often during VHSL matches. Maybe better informing of the moderators could help to prevent these mistakes, because I frequently find myself cutting a moderator who's about to say the correct answer midbreath.

As someone who's trying to do the same thing and basically in the same boat, I can completely sympathize. Looking at the NJ and Northeast boards would be a great start, and depending on how good your team is, going to a tournament that's a qualifier for NSC or HSNCT would probably be good so you guy...

I personally find plays quite easy to read and digest. It's mainly the massive novels (glares at Proust) that burn up my time. I never seem to be able to read summaries of those and retain them either. Short stories and poems are definitely worth reading for yourself though

How does one go about getting a good base of lit knowledge outside the typical high school canon then? I consider myself fairly proficient at lit, but whenever I see questions past around VHSL states or ACF Fall difficulty, I have a really hard time getting any of the obscure lit.
