Re: Fall 2012 schedule discussion

Don't we already have enough regular difficulty tournaments planned for this fall? It seems like everyone's writing one. I agree that it is a bit much to have two hard tournaments in the fall, but that's just a byproduct of the real issue, which is that there are a lot of tournaments, period. I can'...

Re: Summer Practices at the University of Michigan

I'm trying to set my UofM orientation around a wednesday so I can attend this. Hopefully they'll let me skip an evening activity or something for it. Awesome! If I remember correctly, most of the activities near the evening are not mandatory, but you should try to attend anyway (don't want you to m...

Re: MUT 2012 Discussion

Also I felt this tournament used more opera tossups to fit the 3/3 Fine Arts requirements than most question sets and felt there were less architecture/sculpture/other tossups. Another comment regarding this and I guess the ACF distribution in general, but in my personal opinion I feel 3/3 fine art...

Re: MUT 2012 Discussion

Speaking of classical music, I was very excited about the clues on Poulenc's Oboe Sonata (answer: oboe) and the opening bars of Shostakovich's Viola Sonata (answer: Shostakovich). Whoever wrote those is my hero. As for the comment on Beethoven - I find it more useful to think of the classical music ...

Re: Less-Used Topics (And Why?)

Okay, now I remember them. Yeah, I was pretty happy about all of these, and I think most of them did a better job than many ecology/evolution questions at testing things that are actually important. (Unfortunately, the Wilson/Gould/bees one went to our B team when we played against them.) I noticed ...

I remember being quite happy with the ecology/evolution at MUT, but I actually don't remember any of the particular questions you mention. The clue about the Frankfurt cases could have been worded better. I negged with "determinism" on that clue (obviously the first two clues unambiguously point to free will, but I didn't know them). As I understand them, Frankfurt cases are situations where causal determinism is true, under the assum...

Shifting gears entirely, one area I do think has problems is ecology/evolutionary biology. Probably over 99% of ecology bonuses are on either mutualism, Lotka-Volterra, biomes or ecological succession (and those always assume that the "climax community" model is much more accepted/valid than it act...

A: They added someone named Matt who averaged 17 PPG.
