Re: The Future

I think people choosing to go to Australia over a quiz bowl tournament probably isn't a real problem. It isn't like I'm saying "Jeez, man, why did you decide to put dumb ol' Australia ahead of the tournament." The point is that there is a consequence. Sure, it's a great opportunity, but you always ...

Re: The Future

Sorry you're Canadian, my friend. @Dylan Point taken, but seriously, what is to be done about it? I don't agree, however, that small/unknown schools fall prey to this more often, neither do I think we let who's available design our season. I mean, every team suffers from this in a more or less equal...

Re: The Future

I feel like an issue with getting teams to go to more good quizbowl events is commitment not only from the administration, but from the students, as things like IMEA, ICTM, Speech, and countless others take up Saturdays for students that could be spent going to tournaments. It's pretty much impossi...

Re: The Future

But the problem we must face is that players of good quizbowl and others have a different conception of the function quizbowl serves. To outsiders, it's more of a performance, an exhibition of what our society is capable of producing. They look at it like they look at movies. They think we learned a...

Besides, due to the inevitable subjectivity of question writing, adding more powers seems like a way to get people angry.

Re: The Future

I think what needs to happen to ensure the long-term development of Illinois quizbowl is integration. Though I don't really have the experience to back it up, it has always felt like there is two divided camps, split by opinions of what constitutes a good tournament/format/questions/whatever. The re...

Re: ProtoBowl

methinks a callout to Illinois players to show those young upstarts how it's done is in order. Also, how exactly will bonus possession work? Will PPB be a measured stat? Will there be bouncebacks? Actually, right now aside from score and interrupts, there aren't really any metrics to Protobowl. It'...

Re: Illinois '12-'13

OH duh. I remember now. However, I think this might be a little more hype than is necessary. Sure, he had ten tossups a game, but he was playing teams that were usually . . . not competitive. He had 115 against Homewood B. I had 20 less than that versus them, and we've got a solid foundation. I mean...

Re: ProtoBowl

There were a couple of questions where the 'correct' button didn't show after I got it. Seems to be fixed now, though.

EDIT: hmm it isn't showing the 'incorrect' ones either.

EDIT2: OH WAIT enter puts you in chat?

Re: Illinois '12-'13

Actually Prerak beat me by ~5 ppg at Earlybird. Granted, he had three times as many negs, but he can actually power things. However, some of his negs are of the stupid variety. He really does have more legit knowledge, he just doesn't use it aggressively enough. Our current team beat Fenton at ultim...

There are still a few things that need to be worked out, but a few of my teammates have started using it. One relatively simple request I have would be to move the report link moved off to the side, when I wanted a closer look at a certain question , I've misclicked it like 10 times. There have been...

Re: Illinois '12-'13

so, I'm late to the party, but who cares . . . here is a list of groups of people in illinois i respect for quizbowl ability 1. Macomb. Tristan, you scare me a little bit. 2. Loyola. Morgan and Torres are pretty cool, and they're by far the best team that won't rely on one person for almost everythi...

There were slight schedule issues, but the sets were fun to play, and the competition was strong all-around.

Re: The Canon

I just think that the process of deciding what is 'worthy' is almost completely arbitrary. The Three Musketeers is asked about all the time, but other I've never heard The Scarlet Pimpernel come up. That isn't a very good example, because of course Dumas was on the whole a better writer than Orczy, ...

Re: Loyola Ultima (Wilmette, IL) - 1/21/12

I have myself with nine (I'm marked as having seven) tossups over the whole afternoon. The error was that I had three tossups (these 3 were also all powers) for round 8, but was only counted for 1.

On another note, does anyone know where I could find some Minnesota Novice questions to practice with?

I want to get good and ready for knight's challenge on the 7th, but much information is forthcoming, and I haven't been able to find the set yet.

Re: Illinois '11-'12

Sorry to get a bit off topic, but is the Dorman team from NTV from the school in South Carolina? On the school's page on Wikipedia, it said they have a nationally recognized Quiz Bowl team. I guess they must've flown, because people were talking about how long Seven Lakes would have to drive home. I...

Re: New Trier Varsity: ELEGANT — 12/17/2011 (Winnetka, IL)

Besides, taking into account how much of a normal team we could field, and then giving us credit because Ben was basically soloing (the rest of us combined for ~10 TUs all day, I'm pretty sure our record could have been the same with just him) basically assumes that we have the divine right to a tro...

Re: New Trier Varsity: ELEGANT — 12/17/2011 (Winnetka, IL)

Order more pizza, I wanted to try the spinach. But in all seriousness, the only slightly annoying thing was how long it took to announce the brackets for Round 2. All of the moderators were considerate of players and play moved pretty fast. Basically being a substitute for Srinivas, the tournament w...
