Re: Minnesota Open discussion

The Caribbean bonus did not require you to know "Jamaica Kincaid," though, just "Jamaica" (Cliff's home country)--it included a Kincaid clue, but you could lateral it by either knowing a Caribbean island that is a plausible first name or knowing where fellow Jamaican musician Jimmy Cliff is from. I ...

Even though I would 0 this entire packet, I gotta commend you for writing it.

Re: Announcement: Minnesota Open, October 18 2008

I can't speak for others, but I have would far, far, far less of a problem of a team honestly saying (within a reasonable interval) "We can't make the tourney because of conflicts" and not showing up at all than showing up and then ditching halfway through.

Re: Minnesota Open discussion

In regards to teams leaving early, the only other thing I would add is impress upon teams that leaving early has repercussions far beyond "oh, we just forfeit our matches." It screws up either round-robin format or seeding and in MO's case, screws up the tourney in general, because a bye team member...

Stats were being kept in all the rooms I was playing...whether that actually translated into someone saving and recording said stats, I dunno.

Re: JECHT Discussion

Round 6 was really hard--I powered Shadowgate and got Lolo and won a buzzer race on vampires after "Alucard" was mentioned. Questions that prompted blank stares included "Sexy Silvia," "King of the Monsters," "Georama." Of bonuses, having to possess intense Frogger/Phantasy Star/Dead or Alive Xtreme...

No real point, just found it very memorable. Didn't mean anything insulting by it.

Re: Pilatus Discussion

Of the baseball TUs, the 300-win question was a very good one that I negged in the stupidest way possible. The Roy Halladay one seemed overly dominated by statistics aside from the lead-in about President Bush (I got it at the part about him dominating the Detroit Tigers). The rest were fine: I fell...

You expressed those thoughts during the second round of the tourney in a more succint, colloquial way, if I recall.

Re: Pilatus Discussion

Everyone else pretty much has explained this tourney well. I'd just like to say...can we retire "The team was owned by Ray Kroc" as a lead-in for the San Diego Padres?

Re: JECHT Discussion

The only other quibble I guess I have is the slight bits of repetition--while one can perhaps accept the possibility of getting two powers on fairly general Earthbound knowledge (hey, I did!), TWO questions on The Adventures of Lolo, while a kickass game, is probably too much.

Re: Announcement: Minnesota Open, October 18 2008

Wow, apparently I got a 15 in the Maryland game...although looking at the packet, this apparently was a mistake on someone's part because I clearly buzzed in after the power mark. I also thought I played against Carleton, but there are no stats for that game.

Re: JECHT Discussion

This was a terrific series of packets. Well done. I liked the few bones thrown to people like me who never got past 16-bit gaming. I especially liked the audio bonuses, even though I sucked at them. Distribution-wise, I agree that perhaps a different variety of PC gaming could be asked about, and pe...

Re: EFT Discussion

I can't comment on science because I do not know it, but as a historian by trade: I thought the history was fairly strong in the packets, asking about well known events with a good pyramidal structure. My only quibble was that I thought the toss-up about the Frontier Thesis should have prompted on "...

I'm now on the Minnesota house team (whose official name I can't remember but surely has something to do with cars/positronium), so I am no longer a free man but a number.

Re: EFT Discussion

This was a great tournament for a collegiate novice like me. I thought overall the difficulty was of a reasonable level. Thanks to those in charge of putting it on. As a dork, I appreciated the comic book questions, even though two X-Men questions, I admit, are pushing it. How about a question on Ob...
