Re: 2011 HSNCT conversion stats discussion

A Vietnamese myth claims humanity came from one of these creatures mating with a fairy. The Japanese sea god Ryojin usually took this form, and Japan's imperial sword was found in the tail of one of these creatures. In Chinese myth four of them rule the directional seas, and in Norse myth (*) Nidho...

Re: 2011 NSC - 60 teams

A breather would be pretty nice, especially as far as West Coast teams are concerned. We end up flying across the nation for every national tournament, so travel fatigue can set in rather quickly. A larger break between the tournaments gives us a larger buffer for it to wear off.

Re: Books "for Quizbowl"

Mythology: The Illustrated Edition edited by C. Scott Littleton is an entertaining read that covers pretty much the entire high school myth canon. It's a large book (in terms of area and volume), but if you don't mind that aspect, it's a great way to equip yourself to get myth.

Well, that does count as some sort of a formula. It's certainly better than putting each set on the same level.

I'm going to be working on fixing answer detection. Just a quick question, does anyone know of an ideal formula for determining the leaderboard ranking? This didn't really pan out last year probably due to lack of organization, but I think it would be fun if the quizbowl community could get together and do something fun together. And yes, I did feel stupid for a while in practice until I all of a sudden discovered that getting questions early was fun and I could do it more if I studied. It was very enthralling early in my quiz bowl career when I looked something up and then powered it in practice. What do you do with the ki...

Re: "This makes me feel stupid. I don't think i'm coming back."

Your practices should have a relaxed environment to induce people to return. My school's very successful speech and debate team had a sort of off-putting regimented corporate discipline to it, and this is what made the quiz bowl team's laid back atmosphere all the more attractive. Studying material ...

Definitely something that you won't waste much time studying for is poetry. The great thing about it is that it's really easy to gain real knowledge on it because it doesn't take much time to read and process poems (except for epics and extended ones like The Waste Land . However, poetry above anyth...

I appreciate what Fred does and I'll continue to appreciate his rankings. He puts a lot of time and effort into this. Yeah, getting a trophy is like the idea of victory manifested in physical form. For teams that are generally less serious about the competition, it's generally a great psychological boost and at least somewhat of a motivation to return and try it again. Yeah, if Fred were to prioritize TU's when doing rankings, the sample size required would be enormous.
