Re: ACF Regionals at WUSTL (2/26/2011)

Nothing in Kevin's post seems like that legitimately major a complaint to me. While I too would be annoyed in his situation, the relatively minor grievances he is complaining about don't seem to warrant branding the entire tournament as an abject failure. Looking at the tournament as a whole, things...

Re: A Moderator's Guide to Pronunciating Foreign Words

Also, s isn't always a "z" sound. It's only a "z" at the beginning of syllables and, even then, not always. It depends on your accent. Northern accents will pronounce it as a "z" and Southerners won't. Yeah, that's right. I neglected the syllable thing, but I feel like weird southern pronunciations...

Re: A Moderator's Guide to Pronunciating Foreign Words

I can't think of any special cases in German, seeing as it was officially standardized during the Empire. Pronunciation rules are followed virtually uniformly. That being said, a few more notes: >A single "s" is pronounced like an English z. >Double s or an eszett (looks like a lower-case beta)is pr...

Attracting Teams to a Tournament

Carbondale is planning to run a SCOP mirror on October 30, but so far only two teams have expressed interest. I don't believe this reflects the actual level of interest in the region, merely the poor lines of communications between teams. What are some of the best ways to advertise or raise interest...
