Re: CULT Nationals - VCU - 6/26/10-6/27/10

Several car-related incidents preclude me from having the money necessary to attend this. <- EDITED This sounds fun. I'm thinking about writing a trashy side tournament. Something like this tournament goes to 11 (with less rounds of course), except you only have 4 players to split between 2 rounds. ...

Re: Delta Burke 2009 Discussion

Is it really that hard for non-Catholics? Yes, yes it is that hard for (some) non-Catholics (like myself). Then again, I never purport to know anything about religion, but I'm pretty sure that bonus went dead in my room (I don't remember if we had it or if the other team had it, but I'm pretty sure...

Re: Discussion: Can Trash be more girl friendly?

Nah, bad music is important in pop culture. And separately, I don't think quizbowl gets to be the arbiter of what "good" and "bad" pop culture are in a tournament about pop culture any more than we can omit questions about French history because we find France boring. Agreed. For example, while I d...

Since this is somewhat relevant, and I don't want to clutter the other thread with tangents, here are what are sure to be the two most-cited definitions in my upcoming Hart's Dictionary of Quizbowl Criticism I think we've harped on this recently, but "transparent" means that you can figure out the ...

Re: Delta Burke 2009 Discussion

Some of my favorite questions from this tournament (through round 4): -The Confederate Navy tossup (though I doubt I'll ever see this again) -The grand jury tossup (though, by the judge's preliminary hearing it became transparent) -The Britain's Got Talent bonus (but first name of the judges should ...

Re: Is this a BLITZ or not?

For what it's worth - the ACTUAL tossup in question had nothing to do with Narnia or CS Lewis.... I really just wanted to see what consensus was on this issue, seeing as I was basically told that I didn't know what I was talking about (despite 16+ years playing and coaching quiz bowl). After all of...

Re: Is this a BLITZ or not?

Maybe we should require people to answer immediately after buzzing in. This is the rule in Kentucky and it's absolutely terrible. Even a split second pause is hesitation, and half the time the person goes ahead and says it as the moderator is calling hesitation. This just makes no sense, as it woul...

Re: Is this a BLITZ or not?

As a coach in the South, I have to admit that I honestly don't see a particular purpose for blitzing -- other than as a form of "stall" tactic. It seemed clear to me from the first couple of words of the C.S. Lewis question that the answer would be looking for an author, not a work. I have tried to...

Re: HS teams playing college tournaments

First-come, first-served seems like a good criterion to me if physical space is limited. EDIT: Yeah, I agree with the people who say that for a college tournament, if teams have to be cut because of space, it should be high school teams. However, the hosts should set up a cutoff date for registrati...

Re: All-Movie Side Event 20XX

Well, there's a lot of really important movies made prior to 1990. It's not like I was waiting in line to watch Battleship Potemkin when it first came out. Older movies are really important to know so you can better understand newer ones as well. There's lots of resources to learn about old movies....

EDIT: Removed most of the examples, personal or otherwise, so only the essence of the post remains. I will help you set up the buzzer if it means I don't have to play slapbowl. I will build you a new buzzer from scratch if it means I don't have to play slapbowl. Del...

Re: How to Run a Good Tournament

I'd actually like to add a couple of things that I've noticed in my time: 1 - Don't play all the teams from a school in one bracket (with one exception). If all of the teams from a particular school are on equal grounds, then this can be ignored, but otherwise try to make brackets that mirror one an...
