Re: Weaker Questions

I think my least favourite was "Nathaniel Brandon" in the first few lines. I think my favourite was the tossup on Alexandrias. I will edit this post into a list of dislikes and favourite when I see all the questions eventually.

Re: Chicago Open thanks and discussions

When I wrote a Lu Xun question a few months ago, I actually thought I was filling a gap in the canon. My idea was that people don't ask much about Chinese lit, other than classics. To make sure it was gettable, I picked the one name I recognized.

Brendan: What's an example of something you're interested in that you first discovered through quizbowl? VCU thing. I don’t know much about it, but as far as I know people read a packet. After each question or so, they talk about things, look at stuff online, and search archives. I have done this on...

I don't exactly know who's on my team right now. The free agents might have to be spread around as "fifth players" on a bunch of different teams.

academic trash?

Subject: How should NAQT change its distribution for 2010-11? 1. I feel that something should be done to make trash more academically orientated and to give it a fairly well defined canon. In the NAQT distribution thread, some people are talking about how trash questions in academic events could be...

Re: Player Poll 2010: This is serious business

If campaigning is discussion, then I think fourplustwo deserves a spot on that ballot. From playing tournaments and from crashing a bunch of practices this year, I would say that Sinan's usually about as good as the rest of Toronto put together. I know the ICT stats have Eric scoring a lot of the po...

I guess I'm saying that, for a lot of people upset about the trash this weekend, they were probably already expecting not to like the trash this weekend. Tournaments have flaws. Power-marks and the Economist seem like valuable discussion points, but if there was really 3/3 hockey in the set, that's ...

I really liked what I saw of both tournaments. I am glad that NAQT gives out polls every time.

Yeah, I PM'ed about six more people. If this offer ends up with dozens of people telling museum staff they are Dan Passner's close friends, then I withdraw my request. Could there be a way of banding together for a group discount on short notice?

I liked this set, at least for DII which I saw. - I liked that the toss-ups were short, and I especially liked that the bonuses were short. Maybe one issue is that a lot of elite players still play in stuff like EFT and Thunder. It warps the stats a little bit, because it looks like "plenty of teams got 20 ppb" when those teams weren't really part of the tournament's target audience.

I think it's mostly a matter that longer tossups make the tournament feel harder? Because people spend a lot of time thinking, "I don't know this." When I left the tournament I sort of thought the questions were impossible, but looking back over the stats the point scores are not that low. I think s...
