I'm kind of glad it's gone. This tourney has drawn some good teams away from real nationals the last couple years, including the KY State Champions (Johnson Central, who won NTAE) last year. Hopefully :chip: goes the way of Panasonic sometime soon.

The writing guidelines KAAC has posted on their website ask for questions that most people would recognize as improved or possibly even good. If the GovCup questions follow the ideas they've lined out (multiple clues in descending order of difficulty, etc.) then they should be better questions.

I agree with you on the thing about different regions. In my opinion, everyone here is tied together by quizbowl, and where someone is from doesn't make their arguments any more or less valid.

If you look at the actual numbers of teams that play quizbowl tournaments in Kentucky, or any other state under these systems, the number gets much closer to what you would expect in any normal circuit. We're roughly 4 hours from both UT-Knoxville and a bit closer to IU-Bloomington. If we decide to go to SCT this year we'll have to make a decision on whether to make the slightly shorter trip or go to Knoxville and play in our region.

This is the rule in Kentucky and it's absolutely terrible. Even a split second pause is hesitation, and half the time the person goes ahead and says it as the moderator is calling hesitation.

Random draws are usually not the most fair way to do things, as has been discussed in the quizbowl community on multiple occasions. If you're going to run a tournament, you should make an effort to provide balanced pools, or at least pools as balanced as possible. This might require people to put in...
