Hello. I am pleased to announce Vanity Insanity: A Guerrilla Secret Santa Event. All proceeds from this event will go to support The Trevor Project , an organization that supports suicide prevention efforts for LBGTQ+ youth. The Trevor Project runs a hotline, as well as an online chat and text servi...

Re: An incident of intentional content-leaking from an unclear set
I fully believe that this person is deserving of some form of punishment. People need to be aware and learn that their consequences online have real consequences. I would say that some form of banishment from online quizbowl spaces (namely Discord) for some length of time would be more than reasonab...

Re: To NAQT: Ask Ken Jennings to Promote Pyramidal Quiz Bowl on Twitter ASAP
I would like to second Ankit's suggestion. Throughout my outreach efforts in various activities, notably quizbowl and FIRST Robotics, it is much easier to convince someone to come to a meeting if it's something they've heard of before. FIRST has accomplished this by appearing in a Netflix documentar...

Re: Should quizbowl reform the three-part bonus?
As an individual who has a lot of experience playing the VHSL format I much prefer 3 part bonuses. It creates a nice break between tossups and gives you a minute to ground yourself instead of just going from tossup to tossup.

Jakob makes a great suggestion but if you're interested in exploring different types of systems to decide which is the best for you, here is a thread I wrote about selecting a buzzer system . I personally believe that the Andersons are the best buzzer system you can buy. They just happen to be the c...

Re: The Herb Brooks Memorial Packet
I will be reading this packet again at 1600 ET on Sunday, October 27, barring any major objections. As a reminder, this is not a movie packet. It is a packet about the happenings of the 1980 US Olympic Hockey team. I have, however, made an effort to try to ensure that most TUs can be converted in th...

Re: The Herb Brooks Memorial Packet
I've decided that due to school commitments that this packet will only be 10 tossups with an additional "bonus" question that will be read after the first ten. I will be reading this packet at 1400 UTC on Saturday, September 28th in #packet of the discord unless there are any major objecti...

VHSL Sets for 2019-2020 Season
Curious as to which NAQT sets that VHSL-affiliated teams would be unable to play this season, I contacted NAQT and received an answer that I figured would be of use to other teams in the VHSL. Emily, Based on previous years, we will be converting IS-187A and IS-189A into the regular season/district ...

The Herb Brooks Memorial Packet
As many of you know, I am somewhat obsessed with the 1980 US Men's Olympic Hockey team. As such, I've decided to write a 20 tossup packet on the team, titled "The Herb Brooks Memorial Packet" in honor of Herb Brooks. The packet will be hard but I'm trying my best to make the later clues ac...

DC Metro Area Discussion - 2019-2020
Now that the date claim thread is open I figured I'd start the discussion thread.
I'll start it off with a question: Are there any teams in the VA/DC/MD area that you think are on the rise for the upcoming season?

I'd also like to point out the existence of Matt's Buzzers for teams that are in need of a buzzer system that is unable to afford one or needs assistance with covering the cost. Additionally, I'll point out my buzzer system thread for those teams deciding which set to purchase.

Re: So You Want to Buy a Buzzer System
I see that the write-up only references Zeecraft's wired systems and not their wireless set. It's probably for the best, as I've run into several issues with the wireless sets, particularly if different sets are set up in neighboring rooms and they're not set to different channels. (If I recall cor...

So You Want to Buy a Buzzer System
I've noticed recently that there isn't a good comprehensive overview of the different types of buzzer systems offered. The wiki page regarding buzzer systems is slightly outdated so I've decided to lay out several types of buzzer systems offered as well as my opinions on them. At the end of the post...

Re: Question regarding state policies regarding "playing up"
When discussing the VHSL the transfer rule is another one worth highlighting. I was forced to move between two schools in a very short period of time last year (I'm now back at my original affiliation) and my high school career was almost ended because of said rule.

One thing I've found particularly helpful is abstaining from caffeine until after lunch. Normally around round 6 or 7 I'll drink a caffeinated pop and it'll be enough to get me through the rest of the tournament.

My Guide to High School Outreach
Outreach is extremely important in Quizbowl but the vast majority of the discussion I've seen around it seems to focus on the college level of play. Many of the tactics discussed for college outreach, however, don't translate that well to the game at the high school level. I've spent over a year wor...
