Re: FRENCH II on Discord (11/14)
We are one moderator short of being able to run this tournament. If you are available this Saturday (11/14) from 11-4 CST, I hope you will consider helping us out. If you do want to help, please add your name and email to the staffer section of the spreadsheet linked above.

Re: FRENCH II on Discord (11/14)
I've combined preexisting teams/assigned free agents. Aside from the Walston/Bentley/Shimizu team (which is still a three person team because there weren't enough free agents to fill it), if you weren't on a team of four and neither you nor your preexisting partner received an email from me, it's be...

Re: FRENCH II on Discord (11/14)
We are still looking for staffers for this event, which will now officially start at 11 am CST. If you are interested in $20 and our eternal gratitude, please put your name and email in the spreadsheet linked above. Between staffing issues and there only being one mirror instead of the two I had pla...

Re: FRENCH II on Discord (10/24 and 11/14)
Since I expect this set to only take ~5 hours to run, there is some flexibility in when we can start. Please vote in the poll if there is a time you'd prefer. All options are in Central time.

Re: FRENCH II on Discord (10/24 and 11/14)
A perfectly reasonable question. $20 per person. This set is quite large for a side event, and we hope that you all find both its quantity/quality worth the slightly higher cost.

Re: FRENCH II on Discord
10/24 and 11/14 were the most voted for dates, so those are the days we will run this. Here is the team formation/staffing spreadsheet for both dates, with 10/24 on the first sheet and 11/14 on the second: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1K2qr7mFozEYT7s_fWHQLFtzups1SVuESFvH2jJgbnkw/edit?usp=s...

FRENCH II on Discord (11/14)
FRENCH II is now ready to play. There are 12 packets of 20 questions each and it will cost $20 per person to play. It will be played as quads. To give more people a chance to fit it into their quizbowl schedule, I plan on running it twice over Discord on dates to be determined in the poll. I will ad...

Re: FRENCH II
We're nearly done writing, so the time has come for playtesting, probably on one or more of the next few Saturdays. Including tiebreakers, the set is 245 tossups. If you are interested in helping us with this, please fill out the following Google Form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6isv...

Re: FRENCH II
Updates: 1. I am long overdue in recognizing Erik Christensen, Laurence Li, and Rahul Rao-Pothuraju in joining me in writing this set. They've written a lot of cool stuff and I greatly appreciate heir help. 2. As of posting, we are ~70% of the way through, so we are planning to have this ready for C...

Re: FRENCH II
The question ideas have not flown nearly as freely as they did when writing the previous FRENCH, so I am nowhere close to meeting the deadline I gave myself in the last post (73/240 questions are written). Therefore, I am seeking 2-3 people to help me write this set, with the intent to have it ready...

Re: What is World History?
What about questions on non-Western ethnic groups in Western countries? Following my previous logic, these would be world history, but I have trouble thinking about a toss up on Japanese-Americans as anything but American history. I think the disjunction comes from whether the emigrants want to join...

Re: What is World History?
I think questions on European colonialism could be justifiably categorized as either world or European, but ideally the writer/editor would choose clues that fit the distribution they choose to put it in. Much of the discussion I wanted to generate has already happened in the thread Bruce linked, bu...

What is World History?
I began thinking about this question during my most recent rereading of CMST upon reading the following toss up: According to Matthew Paris, a king of this modern-day country rejected a letter by King John in 1213 seeking an alliance and promptly expelled English envoys. The Mensagem (“men-SAH-zhem”...

FRENCH II
To get myself to focus more on writing, this is a very early announcement for FRENCH II. Based on my progress thus far (33 1/2 questions written in 10 months as of the original post) and the faster pace I plan on having, I'd like to have the set ready for CO 2019/summer side event weekends. The dist...

Re: Cal's Mid-Spring Tournament @ UMN (3/3/18)
Like several people before me, I'm going to put out a broad call for teammates and express my excitement for Entirely Real Landscapes. For the main tournament, I'd prefer people who know science and lit, but I'd be happy to play with anyone.

Re: Specific Question Discussion - 2017 FRENCH
I have revised the pederasty and New Guinea questions. The Tchaikovsky 4 question is in the set because I already had it written (it was an unused ACF Nats submission) and I was low on time when I was writing that section.

Re: HIT (Historically Intensive Tournament)
Would anyone be willing to run a Skype mirror of FRENCH? Having neither run a Skype tournament nor played in one, I'd rather not do it myself. There seems to be a fair amount of interest and all profits would go to the TD. Also, I've started a discussion thread for those who wish to talk about FRENC...

I look forward to seeing what people have to say and welcome any and all respectful constructive criticism. Much of why I wrote FRENCH was to learn how to improve my question writing, so I'd appreciate your feedback. Before we begin, you should know that more than one version of the set has been dis...

Re: (This) Tournament is a Crime weekend - 2/25-26/17 - Mich
I'd like to extend a thank you to everyone to staffed FRENCH for me on Sunday. I'm so grateful for those who helped make FRENCH a real event and I want to recompense you for your work. On that note, since French was my first time as TD and people were coming, going, and moving from staff to player, ...

Re: HIT (Historically Intensive Tournament)
I'm not charging anything for distributing the set for mirrors. I've been contacted about mirrors in Canada and the UK, but nothing in the US outside of TTIAC weekend at Michigan is planned, online or otherwise. I'll distribute the set to anyone who wants to run a mirror assuming it happens by the e...

Re: (This) Tournament is a Crime weekend - 2/25-26/17 - Mich

Re: (This) Tournament is a Crime weekend - 2/25-26/17 - Mich
Some notes about FRENCH (formerly known as HIT): 1. Please address concerns about FRENCH to me, not Auroni, at [email protected].com. 2. Given the interest expressed on Auroni's side event spreadsheet and the restricted scope of the set, I'm limiting teams to two people. Register with the spreadsheet ...

Re: HIT (Historically Intensive Tournament)
Sorry for the wait, here are some updates: 1. I'm taking Bruce Lou's suggestion and changing the name of the tournament to FRENCH as it's much more creative than my idea. 2. Auroni has added FRENCH to the TTIAC side event list, so given sufficient interest, it's happening at Michigan and any mirrors...

HIT (Historically Intensive Tournament)
Hello quizbowl community, Since this is my first post and most of quizbowl at best knows me as the guy next to Andrew Wang, let me introduce myself. I am Alex Fregeau, a linguist turned archaeologist and primarily history quizbowl player who just graduated with my BA from UIUC. In an effort to impro...
