Thank you for making this happen, Kai. (I speak from experience that making this happen hasn't always been easy in past years.)

Thanks to Ted, Ian, Joe, and the staff for organizing this event. It was quite well-run, a lot of fun, and a wonderful and welcoming way to get back into the game.

Re: Oxford Open @ Carleton (8 June 2019)

Since I will have moved back to Ottawa by this point, and have not played any Oxford Open mirrors this year, I will be interested in being a free agent for this tournament. Please approach me if interested, o Canadian people.

Re: I Love You, QB, So Please Get It The F*** Together

Further thoughts on building better stepladders without missing stairs: I have been thinking and discussing this quite a bit in the last few years, and have come to several conclusions through a combination of reading and my own reasoning and experience. (And I apologize in advance to survivors of a...

Re: I Love You, QB, So Please Get It The F*** Together

The idea of resigning this to a whisper network makes me sick to my stomach. I understand why doing anything more when something might just be 'this person is creepy and did x that isn't a crime but was bad" is also not the best way to approach things, but if we leave this to a whisper network...

I don't know how widespread it was, but I was very surprised that titles in the original language were not accepted as answer lines. I gave "Tikhiy Don" as the answer in the bonus on "And Quiet Flows The Don," because that is the original language title, I had read it in that lan...

Re: On Exactitude in Writing

I have to agree with this one, Will, especially in cases where the question writer is trying to clue the type of answer they are looking for, and ends up being not only too vague, but implying the wrong meaning. For example, a few weeks ago in practice we read a tossup where the answer line was &quo...

Re: Quizbowl and Mental Health

Also, I think the suggestion that my interactions with A-Team and non-A team members of Illinois 2013 was to treat any of them as an NPC is very uncharitable. All members of Illinois who participated in Nationals in 2013 spent hundreds of hours doing non-QB things together that year. I am 100% conf...

Over the weekend, I heard about this thread from other people in private communication, and especially about Ike's post. I greatly enjoyed this set, and thank John and Max for writing it. Notes: on the vinegar question, apparently multiple rooms at VCU negged with "garlic" on hearing the clue "chicken adobo." I can't remember the wording of the clue, but that might have been a misleading setup. i c...

Two reasons --- I speak as someone who has quit, come back, and is almost certainly older than the median age of this forum and has considered how my perspective has changed over the years. (1) As I mentioned elsewhere, a 20/20 quizbowl game is forty miniature conversations about things someone may ...

Re: Apologies and General Discussion

Stephen, I am now confused as to whether your objection is: My objection is that the tournament was improperly distributed, skewing towards artists who are less important in art history. A byproduct of that was that some questions were easier for me, but I'm not objecting to the difficulty. The rea...

Re: Apologies and General Discussion

I only noticed that this set had an abnormal number of questions on women because, as the tournament went on, I started being able to narrow answers down faster based on the probability that the artist being described was a woman. At that point, it's probably not just a problem of overestimation on...

Use this thread to discuss A Culture of Improvement. Overall I was pretty happy with how the tournament ended up.
