Re: Illinois '17-'18

Anyone have predictions for 2017 Scobol Solo? I've made a preliminary list of participants that I think have strong-ish generalist ability. Alexander Kuptel Arjun Sundararajan Aristotle Vainikos Conrad Oberhaus Deepak Moparthi Ethan Strombeck Hanson Hao Jaden Lucas Mitch McCullar Sophie Netzel Tim ...

Re: Illinois '17-'18

To keep Kevin's discussion going, I will put in my two cents about rankings. 1. Fremd (several experienced players, quite solid coverage especially in history and literature). 2T. Auburn (Strombeck is a very very good generalist and great at fa and history). 2T. OPRF (same team structure as Auburn, ...

Re: Illinois '17-'18

Fremd was all juniors and sophomores last year, so they will only have gotten better, and likely significantly better judging by how rapidly they improve. Kodama-led OPRF will be similar to Auburn in that both consist of an underlying generalist making most buzzes... their matches against each other...

I would be interested in playing this be it at a chicagoland mirror or at HSNCT or NSC. Sounds awesome!

Re: Midseason Poll

Just wondering, is there a particular reason there's no ballot from an illinois coach? I realize there may be a very good reason behind it, but considering the relatively high activity and depth of the illinois circuit, I was just surprised there was no ballot.

Re: On Note Taking

Oh yes negging certainly improves retention rate. A good number of my best buzzes are derived from clues I've previously negged in practice or, unfortunately, during an actual tournament..

Re: General discussion

Can I see the birds tossup (with first line talking about meleager's sisters)? I knew the clue and was waiting to buzz depending on what the question was asking for, but a player from the other team took the risk and buzzed before the "this ____" was said.

Re: On Note Taking

I think your meticulous attitude towards note taking is awesome! I'd suggest using Quinterest as a resource along with wikipedia/Google to give you context about which clues would be more likely to come up, since wikipedia sometimes overemphasizes facts that are relatively insignificant in quizbowl....

Re: A Comprehensive List of Science Topics

I completely agree. However, I think that for people who are just beginning quizbowl (especially high school freshmen who haven't taken AP classes yet), using Quinterest and lists is probably the best way to rapidly improve and get interested in the game . I think this is a fantastic idea for new p...

Re: Illinois '16-'17

Stevenson will be going to the Stevenson kickoff, where barrington and stevenson A should finish on top by a good margin, followed by, in no particular order, a mix of auburn IMSA stevenson B and Fremd A. Not sure what places 3-6 will be though, But it's important to note given field size, top ~5 sh...
