Re: How to study packets?

There isn't really a surefire way to get more powers, besides extensive studying and note-taking. Making flashcards would be your best bet, but don't fill them with information in font size 1. Underline the main events/characters/details and maybe add a small sentence to explain the significance. As...

Re: How to study packets?

You really won't gain anything by speed reading a packet, but it isn't worth your time in my opinion to spend hours on one. When I read a packet, I read one clue/sentence at a time and try to get the clues to stick in my head, that way the answer line is more easily relatable to what I've just read....

How to recruit younger players?

Due to half of our team being seniors this year, I want to recruit a new batch of players to compete and continue to grow our program. However, due to a lack of middle school quiz bowl in our area, many of the younger and newer kids are very intimidated by the greatly expanded canon and pyramidal qu...

I guess my teacher didn't think he was necessary then, I was under the impression that it had turned into a bare-bones class. Good thing I had read about him somewhere else.

Re: 2015 HSNCT conversion stats discussion

While I agree that Taney should still have questions written about him, I also understand why the conversion stats are so low. The APUS course was redesigned this year to make it more streamlined, and it was very noticeable for me since I was enrolled in it. It focused much less on names and dates a...

Re: Going to HS tournaments without coaches?

Because our coach having a kid/working Saturdays, Oakland Mills almost never went to a tournament with a coach. We signed up for tournaments and then drove to them. Fortunately for us, we got some school funding. We always went as Oakland Mills, and our school didn't care/had no problems with it. I...

Re: Going to HS tournaments without coaches?

But would we be able to play as a pseudonym team, and then play as our high school at nationals? Would that just require us to give some background info to the tournament directors?

Going to HS tournaments without coaches?

Our school has basically given us the finger in terms of funding, opting instead for boosting the football team again. We are beginning to fundraise to get to some of the tournaments, but there are many that we won't be able to attend either because of funding or because of our coach's busy lifestyl...

What is your definition of a good Quiz Bowl player?

This topic came up in conversation the other day, and my team isn't sure of how to rank ourselves. For example, I am the captain of my team and have won individual scoring awards in both tournaments I have gone to this year (yeah, two tourneys is kinda sad, but our funding is on the rise!). However,...

Maintaining High Levels of Mental Stamina?

I was just at my first real tournament this weekend (first as a high-scoring captain), and I came out guns ablazing. However, after the first five rounds I began to drop off in performance, and I had a few too many unnecessary negs. I tried the Red Bull trick, but it didn't pick me up at all. I have...
