Re: Player Poll: WONDERFUL

While it is obviously flattering to be considered for this, there is little doubt in my mind (or I'd wager in the rest of UK quizbowl) that Ewan MacAulay is a better player than me (I still get psyched by remembering that I beat him to a chemistry tossup at PB 2015). My fault for not expressing this...

Re: Specific Question Discussion

I guess as the main editor for biology (as well as Other Sci and large bits of the music), I had better reply. Perhaps something which wasn't emphasized to the American audiences playing the set was how a lot of the science was pegged at an easier difficulty than the rest of the content. This reflec...

Re: Quizbowl in the UK

Hi Vivek. We get excited about Americans crossing the atlantic to come and play quizbowl so your post provoked a flurry of activity on our informal UK quizbowl FB chat, and I was nominated to give an overview, so here goes: The UK circuit is comparatively small, but very active and well established....

Re: Science Feedback Thread

Just a few thoughts about the (mostly excellent) biology questions: Despite being able to identify what most of the clues were referring to, the chemotherapy tossup threw me for a while because of a slightly odd choice of pronoun. Also, the clue which presumably is referring to methotrexate as the i...

Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements

Playing the non-US sports packet at Festivus yesterday reminded of me "CamO Sports", a packet-sub tournament I edited in the UK last year. There were 9 rounds of 20 tossups with some semblance of a distribution (3 football, 2 rugby, 2 cricket, 2 racquet sports, 2 golf, 1 motorsport, 1 US s...

Re: 2016 Terrapin Specific Question Discussion and Errata

The first line of the joints tossup contains the word "periarticular" which only requires you to know that articular is the adjective which refers to joints, which isn't especially difficult.

Re: PB 2016: Specific Question Discussion

A minor point, but packet 1 seems to have 2 physics bonus sets (Atwood machines & Ductile fracture) and 0 chemistry bonus sets - or at least that was the case with the packets we received at the UK mirror, it may have since been rectified.

Re: Specific question discussion

A few quibbles around some of the biology which occured to me whilst I was reading at the UK site: The second clue in the Adipose Tissue tossup read, "The resident macrophages of this tissue may release pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and TNF-alpha". They may do, but so do the tissue ...

Re: ACF Nationals 2016 Discussion

When the impromptus tossup was read in our game, I buzzed on the second sentence description of Fantasie-Impromptu and promptly realised I didn't know whether "Fantasy" or "Impromptu" was being clued. I went with the former and was negged. As far as my probably limited understand...

Re: Oxford Open - Ewan's Questions

Not wanting to hijack Ewan's thread, but I thought I'd make myself known as the author/editor of the biology questions, as well as quite a bit of the auditory fine arts and some trash (Twin Peaks, Seoul 100m...). This is only my second time writing biology questions, and my first with the music so u...
