Re: Is culinary art a fine art?

In the Editors' Packet of 2014 ACF Fall, I came across this tossup: An Indonesian dish of this type including boiled vegetables and hard-boiled eggs in peanut sauce is called gado-gado. Dishes of this type that integrate bread include fattoush and panzanella. Mustard is often added to a component of...

Re: VHSL 2014-15

Now that all Regional tournaments should have concluded, I decided to put all the state match-ups into one place. 1A: Rappahannock County Rappahannock Radford Galax 2A: Maggie Walker George Mason Central-Wise Grundy 3A: Western Albemarle Cave Spring New Kent Poquoson 4A: Woodgrove Loudoun County Dee...

Re: GSAC XXII Question-specific Discussion

The question I remember being seriously frustrated by was the last bonus of round 9, I think it was. The one with three very difficult Pokemon answer lines. Both me and another teammate (he far more than me) have played Pokemon in the past, and neither of us had any idea what any of the answers were...

Re: Flashcarding

I've never been a huge fan of flashcarding, myself. I usually find just writing things down and repeating them (writing questions helps with this too) to be the best method of learning new information. Isn't that what flashcarding is? Sorry, this was poorly phrased... A repetition of writing someth...

Re: Flashcarding

If you're trying to find an easier method to learn things then you might just be approaching this wrong I think the problem here is one of efficiency, not difficulty. Flashcarding isn't impractical because it's hard, it's impractical because it takes a lot of time and has a payoff less than the val...

Re: HSQBRank 2014-15

What do the asterisks mean (like the one next to western albemarle) Preseason projections I'm still using because teams haven't played anything to give me stats yet. Didn't Western Albemarle play at Cav Classic (albeit without Eric Xu)? They did. And although they managed a pretty respectable finis...

VHSL 2014-15

The new VHSL season starts today! I know that these games matter for little but bragging rights until the conference tournament in January, but I know my team is super excited to get started playing regularly again! How is everyone looking forward to the season, and does any brave soul want to ventu...

Re: VCU Fall Tournament VI at VCU (10/11/2014; Richmond, VA)

Thanks to VCU for running such a great tournament! As Cody correctly points out, the tournament was completed at a remarkable pace, and competency and professionalism absolutely oozed out of all the readers and staffers. The set was very fun to play, and overall the tournament was a really great exp...

Studying Sets You've Already Played

Does anyone else find this helpful? I feel like when I play a set, I remember a lot of the clues I hear, and so I don't have to spend as much time studying sets I'm familiar with in order to gain the same amount of knowledge I would if I practiced an entirely new set. On the other hand, when I do th...

Re: 2014 PACE NSC Logistics Discussion

Apart from the long break following lunch which pushed back the end time almost an hour, I was really impressed by the smoothness with which the tournament was run. The only comment I have is that one of the rooms we were playing in, I think it was called the "tech foyer", was actually jus...

Re: 2014 PACE NSC Questions Discussion

Overall, I really liked the question set. There were a lot of different, interesting, answer lines, and a lot of challenging clues. I agree that some clarification on answers like "David's Army" and "Friends of Job" would have been helpful. Other than that, the only real problem ...

Re: Looking to increase our competitiveness

Thanks Michael and Eric! I think we're going to try to make the NAQT VA State Championship in March, though our focus for now remains on VHSL states. Over the summer, we'll study a lot and learn about the other various formats and tournaments we can participate in, and do a lot in the Fall and Sprin...

Looking to increase our competitiveness

Hi All! My QB team has been competing with some success from District to state levels in the past few years. We recently beat Thomas Jefferson to the VHSL North Regional Championship, and we're very optimistic about our chances at States. But the younger starters of our team (our two juniors and mys...
