Re: Neg Control

The easiest kinds of negs to cut down are those that you make outside of your category, assuming that you play on a team where multiple people cover different things. Prioritize not locking your teammates out on things that they know, and you can focus on nailing tossups in your category and not loc...

Re: 2016 HSNCT discussion

The inertia question happened to be in one of the packets that I was helping to edit. I'm not especially up on my physics, so I didn't attempt to make any definitive determination about the question as a whole, but I did spend some time reading about the first sentence. Here is that sentence: "...

Re: Sponsorship for NAQT?

At least one team has used a GoFundMe to solicit donations for nationals. Running a quizbowl tournament is also a pretty popular option, but it's getting late in the year and I don't think there are many schools with quizbowl clubs in Canada. You could try this if you're sure you can get a profitabl...

I also negged the tossup on the Russia-Ukraine conflict with "Ukrainian Civil War". It seems to me that this should be at least promptable, if not outright acceptable.

For the "distance formula" tossup, could you give rationale for not having "Pythagorean theorem" be at least promptable? A teammate that I wasn't playing with told me that he negged early with the latter, and it seems "close enough" to me.

Electronic Scorekeeping

Lately, I've been scorekeeping my school's practices with a basic spreadsheet that I keep on Google Docs. It automatically totals the number of 15's, 10's and negs while also keeping track of running score, PPG and PPB. It seems to me that spreadsheets like these could be used to scorekeep at a tour...

Re: Cheating in High School Quiz Bowl

I'm saying this because of how easy it can be for players to cheat off of paper packets, so moderators also have a responsibility of being wary of the position of the packet at all times. To prevent this, moderators can hold something behind the packet (like a folder) to hide the back of the packet...

Brad should be on your list, his performance at Loyburn (not on NAQT), which was 107.5 ppg on GSAC, convinced me. Hey, a lot of quizbowlers (including James and I) could put up >100 ppg in a standard div. field, especially without experienced teammates competing for points. In any case, the only Hi...

For more history of philosophy type books, I enjoyed Anthony Kenny's four volume set (ancient, medieval, early modern and modern). I second this. I'm reading this right now, and I find it a lot less dry than Russell's History of Western Philosophy. The author has collated all four volumes into a si...

How you prepare will depend on the material on your school's tryout exam. If you don't know any specifics about the exam, just go through some of your old science textbooks and read through them to gain more knowledge of the basics. However, a good resource for all things Scioly is the Scioly Wiki ....

I feel similarly about rock music in quizbowl. There are plenty of really obscure classical composers that come up in highschool quizbowl, yet no rock music questions get more obscure than Led Zepplin, or the Beatles Rock music belongs more in a trash set than in a real competition. As for my own team, the only reason we did make it into the first bracket was luck. If we hadn't beat St. Viator by 15 points, they would have made the top bracket due to Fenton leaving early. With no offense to any members of the St. Viator team, I feel like that game was not attributable to our l...
