Re: Need help convincing my coach to get us to tournaments
These are all good suggestions, I would add one more: if you do host a tournament, don't overdo it--especially if you do it on pyramidal questions. Be especially sure that you (with Chris' assistance?) get experienced moderators: 24-36 teams should probably be your limit unless you are blessed with ...

Re: Is culinary art a fine art?
We in the sovereign state of Illinois have an uneasy history with this topic. One year, the final bonus of a championship match had the subject of pasta shapes. This was problematic not only because of its placement in the packet, but such shapes can vary by size (tortellini vs. tortelloni), name (p...

I also liked the old NSC format. And Lee, the caterer probably put dark meat in the chicken salad [this is a joke only Southerners will understand]. I think what happened with a lot of changes is that a number of people decided that quiz bowl should become more streamlined, but not everything went t...

In many cases, I think it's probably due to coaches retiring, transferring schools, or leaving education, and their successors might not be interested in continuing the tournament. If the successors are new to the school, I can understand their opinion that hosting a tournament might be a bit much f...

Brad, I can shed some light on this. I have to put in a word for Tristan here. He can certainly speak for himself, but I would guess that his "inactivity" stems from 1) there are relatively few tournaments in his area, 2) he and his team might not be able to get to more frequent tournaments further north, and 3) he may not be...

I for one thoroughly agree with the Sayeef's points on what makes a good coach. If your coach is one of them, though, wor...
