Shorter textbooks, like the one published by AMSCO (I don't remember what it's called, we just called it "AMSCO") that are usually used to study for the APUSH exam, can be helpful. Thirding the recommendation for the AMSCO AP US History book; used it to cram for the APUSH exam and it work...
