The Berea Academic Tournament (The BAT): November 2, Berea Communty High School

It is with great pleasure that I can announce the first annual Berea Academic Tournament, an independently-written, KAAC (Kentucky Association for Academic Competition) style tournament. This event is scheduled to take place on November 2nd at Berea Community High School. We are aiming for a start t...

Re: VHSL 2014-15

I'll take a crack at 1A West Regionals: 1A West, early season: Conf. 45: Radford (defending 1A West runner-up)/Eastern Montgomery Conf. 46: Chilhowie, Patrick Henry - GS Conf. 47: It's wide open with the retirement of Coach Z, but I would say any combination of Hurley, Northwood, Haysi, Honaker. Con...

VHSL Scholastic Bowl: Regional Contenders

Since Regional/State for VHSL is only a couple of months away, I think it is time to take a look into who is performing strong in the regional realignment. I can only speak for the 1A west regions, but I expect the 1A West to look like: CONF 45: Radford/Eastern Mont. - Radford should be a lock. EM h...

Re: Where do I start?

I have students who are interested in being a part of a Quizbowl team and I have the backing of my school's administration to get things started. What do I do next? Are there organizations I can get in touch with in my state, West Virginia, that would assist me in getting a team started and provide...

Re: Books with Info

I would also recommend The New York Times Guide to Essential Knowledge, as there are good overviews of all major subject areas. Surprisingly, Benet's Readers Encyclopedia has several references to fine art persons.

Re: How to practice when at an intermediate level

Well, I guess I may have been misleading. Our team isn't really new... I just didn't know what forum this post should have gone in. We do have several sets of buzzers, so there is enough for everyone. I asked my coach about a skirmish match today, but my coach said she has tried in the past, but it...

Re: How to practice when at an intermediate level

I have a couple of questions to start. First, do you guys have a buzzer system? If not, harass your school to get one. If you do and are unable to use it for practice, there are several apps that can be downloaded for smartphones/tablets that will allow for a buzzing sound during practice. Designate...

"A" Team and "B" Team Distribution: Where to Put Your Eggs

This year is our team's first year in participating at independent tournaments. I have a total of 9 students, distributed as thus: 3 leading, very good players, 3 good supporting players, and 3 newbies. I'm aiming to do two teams at the tournaments, but I would like to ask how I should distribute th...

Re: How to Study for Tournaments (IS Sets)

I second Corry above on taking notes. Having players review what they are commonly missing is well worth focusing on. It also helps add a couple of clues to a particular answer that they are looking into learning more about. I would also recommended Quizlet for creating flashcards about common autho...

Re: VHSL Region D Tournament

Any update on the results of this Tournament? I was hoping to find out who to pull for at the state championship.
