At the conclusion of the last in-state tournament, Rotary, it's time for final in-state rankings. 1. Saint Joseph With a win at NAQT State, Saint Joseph narrowly maintains its hold on the top spot. Steve Benchik, Love Osunnuga, and Reed Oei have proven to be a solid one-two-three combination, althou...

Location of Powermarks

This is just a thought I had one day; not sure whether it's just totally ridiculous or not really relevant or whatever. If you look at powermarked quizbowl questions, they're all marked so that the powers make sense if you're reading or were writing the question; e.g. the power cuts off at the cruci...

Indiana 2015-2016

Don't know if there's anyone in Indiana left on these forums, but here's the scant news on this state this year. I'm not sure what exactly has happened to Culver's program, or what will happen (they didn't attend Nationals for the second consecutive year), but Rotary may have a new host this year. I...

Feel free to tear these projections apart... 1. Auburn. I don't think there's much to discuss here; Evan and Cole are both ...

Re: 2014 NASAT Discussion

I feel as if there were several answers that were re-used twice, often in the course of the same packet or even the same half; the Richard Wright that came up twice in the second half of the first packet was the most glaring example in my mind. The clues for both were different, so I'm not sure if i...

Saint Joseph (IN) will continue to attend as many Chicago area tournaments as possible, although given that we don't really have a team this year it's more likely that you'll be seeing "The Academy of Carpentry"/me playing solo

How to Get Better at Science

This is a question that's plagued me for a long time because as opposed to the other two "Big Three" categories, Lit and History, the subcategories of Science seem to cover so much more different ground; Chemistry and Physics are a lot different then, say, European and World History, or Br...

Indiana 2014-2015

Since I'm bored and at the NASAT right now, I suppose it's time to continue this discussion about the somewhat relevant but weakening state in Indiana. We're still a state heavily immersed in Chip, other irrelevant formats, and highly-modified or watered-down nonstandard NAQT questions. Phil Blessma...

Re: Good ways to improve literature knowledge?

As previously mentioned, plays and short stories are fast reads and still comprise relative knowledge. I'd only add to the above list what some have potentially implied already: that, if you do choose to read a novel (which can take some time), look up the author in question in quizbowldb or quinter...

Saint Joseph High School really enjoyed this tournament. As previously noted, this year's BHSAT was excellent and very fun to play, and I personally found the competition and the skill level of the field a very fun and difficult experience (in a good way).

Rebuilding a Squad and Dealing with an Ability Gap

Frankly, I believe that the plain old daisy-chain system, without large fancy lights, meshes of wires and countless adapters, each of which has a high likelihood of malfunctioning, is the best option. After all, we aren't a game show here--anything that adequately signals the first player to buzz in...
