Re: Introducing the UQC
From what I can tell, Owen is a very good tournament director who has run good, strong events. In an ideal world, I would advise Owen to work within existing organizations and circuits to promote good quizbowl and run events. Perhaps that could include continuing to run online tournaments in the sam...

Midwest Summer Tournaments?
Are there any plans for Midwest opens/summer tournaments? I'm not sure what schools could host or what the policies for hosting are, but ideally you could get a host of players. NASAT or Ottawa Hybrid would make a good main event tournament, and presumably there are a number of side events on the do...

This was an enjoyable tournament and the questions were good.
I *might* suggest updating some of the clues--they weren't huge deals, but particularly in sports questions, a number of the questions about what teams players are on, etc. are out of ate.

I think Caleb does identify some potential issues, but I think they can be worked around--at the very least, you might need to do something like bring in editors specifically to handle categories, like geo/CE/pop culture, that your other editors may not be able to do on their own.

I think Matt Bollinger upthread got at a good point that a lot of "trivia" really highlights more of the *experience*, not just the competition. Like when I go to a pub trivia-Geeks Who Drink-like event, I want to win, of course, but I think a lot of people there, including some people on ...

This is an exhaustive (but not exhausting!) post on an interesting topic. I'm not fully experienced in the "trivia" world, but I do have a few thoughts: 1. I totally agree that things like Buzzword, QBlitz events (like Dede Allen or PAVEMENT), and even breezy side events (Acro-Demia, etc.)...

I think there's four reasons I can think of in favor of bonuses beyond simply "do they affect who wins the game" and "do they take up more time than the net score might indicate." 1. We learn from them. While this can be taken to unhelpful and ludicrous extremes, I do think we ca...

I also think that early clues also sometimes form a foundation for future buzzes--even if few people buzz on that particular clue, they receive some context and information that helps them to buzz at a later point. I think that clue about Fillmore is fine added information because it's short and comes very early. It's when we get bonus parts like the ones that Henry mentioned where the added information is sprinkled throughout the part and sometimes drowns out the easy clue or information.

I think personally college questions are generally appropriate length-wise, but they, especially on bon...
