Re: Errors Report and Discussion

I'm a little confused by this. The tossup reads, "a piece for two string orchestras tuned a semitone apart." If you're trying to suggest that it should read "quarter tone," I don't think that's right, in spite of what a certain Wikipedia list article might claim. I don't have acc...

Re: Chicago Open Date Preference?

I'm going to weddings on the weekends of July 9 and 23, if that counts. I'd probably attend CO on any other weekend.

Thought I'd get the ball rolling; are people interested in hearing the rest of this (and Shantanu, of course) free on Monday and/or Tuesday?

Re: Writing Music Questions for Music Players

"do we reward theory knowledge or score knowledge?" I don't think it needs to be one or the other. People come to know about music in different ways--as performers, casual chamber musicians, concertgoers, CD collectors, serious students--and I don't see the need to prioritize absolutely b...

Re: Writing Music Questions for Music Players

Well, yes - but, as above, the same information could be conveyed in a clue that didn't name the keys. Sorry, I was a bit unclear. What I meant to say was that by naming the keys you do in fact convey one extra bit of information without losing anything, and that that one bit is precisely what is m...

Re: Writing Music Questions for Music Players

I'd argue that pitch specificity, when well done (i.e., at no loss of information about function), provides an extra layer of detail that can trigger memory and/or help players buzz with confidence. I agree in principle that function is usually the most significant (but not always the only significa...

Re: CO Side Event: The Jean-Baptiste Lully Memorial

IRC sounds great. I really liked much of what this set (and the music at CO proper, for that matter) did, especially in terms of answer selection, which I thought ranged from solid to downright inspired. Thanks to everyone involved for producing a really fun tournament, and I look forward to hearing...

In the interest of hearing some more nationals rosters:

Stanford's ACF team will be Mike Sexton, Brian Lindquist, Arnav Moudgil, Kevin Koai. The NAQT D1 team will be Eric Smith, Nico Martinez, Frank Guan, Kristiaan De Greve, and Kevin Koai, and the D2 team will be the same as at sectionals.

RM B was incredibly impressive at NAQT, so they'll definitely be strong next year. Sadly, I never got to see RM A or TJ B play at NAQT or PACE. Gov and DCC will of course be national contenders. My prediction for Northern California is that no one from around here will make playoffs at any nationals...

Is anyone here going to Stanford? So far the only quiz bowlers I know going there are myself (Kevin Koai of Mission San Jose) and someone from Lakeside (Patrick Leahy, I think?).

MISSION SAN JOSE WILL OWN No bias there Ugh, please don't let this guy's actions color your opinion of the MSJ quiz bowl team as a whole. And while we certainly appreciate the mentions, we are not going in expecting too much. Having played (and lost to) Lakeside twice, I really do believe that they...

A high school tournament (untimed) at Stanford actually introduced a similar "Strength of Schedule" statistic for breaking ties. It was defined as the average of your team's PPG and all of your opponents' PPG. Obviously not a perfect system, but it worked out all right for this particular ...
