Re: Clearinghouse for Random Packet Announcements

Hey, I have a packet of Zelda tossups if anyone wants to hear them. I have a lot more answer-lines, so if people are interested I could expand it to ~70 questions.

Re: 2012 STANLEY CUP @ Georgetown Day (2/4/12)

I just checked, and the stats for this tournament are now up (on the right sidebar): http://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/835/ . I guess it must have taken a little time to upload the stats because they were all stored in a dark room of the terrifying labyrinth that is Daniel Brach-Neufeld's brain. ...

Can you explain that more? He didn't exactly declare war. He more just talked down pyramidal quizbowl (indirectly), saying something along the lines of "There aren't going to be any of those long, drawn out, convoluted questions at this tournament that you might hear at other places. The quest...

It would have been a little awkward to announce an upcoming pyramidal tournament after the Hammond coach declared war on pyramidal quizbowl in his opening speech.

The stats for our games against Hunter B and Dorman have us scoring 100 fewer points than we scored. We beat Hunter B (by 20) in a tiebreaker and were down 45 against Dorman.

What Happens to DC-Area Quizbowl Next Year?

I haven't been around that long, and I'm unfamiliar with the ebb and flow of quizbowl, so I was wondering if anyone could give me some perspective and tell me what they think Quizbowl in the DC-area will be like next year. I'm only asking this because I believe GDS, St. Anselms, and Blair are gradua...

Re: Attracting more teams to the DC circuit

I don't know what to say about the individual teams that are really active now without coaches (I would really suggest finding one) I don't know if the lack of coaches in the area is entirely due to a cavalier attitude; I think it's also due to the fact that good coaches are hard to find. When our ...

Re: Attracting more teams to the DC circuit

The same reason infomercials or whatever start with "Aren't you tired of _______ " , well now there's the new product! I guess contrast increases the effectiveness. It's important to focus on the ultimate goal. As a community, we supply pyramidal questions and tournaments. The goal is to ...

Re: Attracting more teams to the DC circuit

As we are an all-freshmen team at Oakland Mills , we vary round to round depending on the amount of calc and physics questions. For all of us, that was our first "good quizbowl" tournament after going to Centennial and Green Eggs and Hammond. Those served as a "gateway" for me t...

Re: Attracting more teams to the DC circuit

Actually we're on that, writing a set that is not quite novice, but on the accessible side of regular difficulty. Between Fall Novice, NAQT A-sets, and what OACQ (Olympia) offers, and probably others that I don't know about, there is a lot to work with as far as easier pyramidal is concerned. By &q...

Re: Attracting more teams to the DC circuit

I think that running more novice tournaments would be a good idea. Last fall, when I had just started Quizbowling, I had a great time at the fall novice tournament hosted at TJ. It gave my team-mates and I a chance to have fun and get some questions--without getting decimated by the almighty titans ...

Considering the inexperience of many of the readers, it would have been a good idea to have some replacement questions. In one of our games, a moderator said "correct" to an answer given after he had already called "time," thus disqualifying the question--which had no replacement...

Attend practice, see which subjects your teams are complaining about. If you hear somebody yell things like "dangnabit, we always miss those social science questions" or "ugh, I *HATE* African literature so much", that's a good clue that you could really add value to your team b...

My Problem With Studying for Quiz Bowl

Hey, everyone. I was recently indoctrinated into the cult of quizbowl, and (like everyone else) I'm trying to get better at it. I try to study and improve, but I feel overwhelmed. Whenever I read something deep, I feel like I'm being inefficient with my time; whenever I read something more general, ...
